"Yes, you can effectively substitute for steamed milk using a microwave by combining heating with mechanical agitation to create foam. Since microwaves alone heat milk without aerating it, you must use a secondary method to introduce air bubbles before or after heating." ie use your $4 milk frother with microwaved milk. Although just microwaving coffee in milk isn't bad either.
