Note: AAFES isn't just for active/retired military. It is also open to various federal civilian agencies as well (mostly in Dept of Defense but some other ones too). Been this way for a while.
I mention this because you may have a friend or family member who qualifies for opening an account without even realizing it. New members get -10% off their first purchase, and new Star Account applicants actually get -25% off their first day purchase. So potentially you could get this thing for $975 if the stars align.

My dad is retired military. Can I just get him to create an account and order one for me?

Thanks. I was able to order one. My dad already had an existing account, so there was no extra 10% off, but it's all good. $1,299 vs $1,799 is savings enough.

If you are not authorized, here's the rule:

"Notice of Intent to Resell
Exchange patrons are prohibited from the following: (1) Making (or purchasing for the purpose of making) a sale, exchange, transfer, or other disposition of the Exchange's merchandise or services to unauthorized patrons (customary gifts of a personal nature are permissible). (2) Using the Exchange's merchandise or services to produce income. (3) Making purchases for the purpose of resale by, or on behalf of, an installation's private organization or other non-government entity."

Not complaining. A couple of SKU's are $500 off recent Apple price hike. Not expecting this to continue, probably clearing out existing inventory.
