This GarveeHome 12,000 BTU mini split is a budget heat pump that stands out for strong cooling, quiet operation, and lower power use than window or portable units. Real-world installs describe easy DIY setup for handy owners, with precharged condenser refrigerant, preflared lines, and heating that can hold up well in cold weather. The main drawbacks are the lack of WiFi on this model, the need for vacuuming and careful electrical work, and some concern about shipping damage or early failures. It looks like a solid value if you are comfortable with the install.

  • Buyers who need built-in Wi-Fi or app-free control, because silent mode and power-limit settings are app-only and the app can be unreliable.

  • Homes that need a simple plug-in setup, because the unit may need dedicated wiring, breaker slots, and a proper disconnect.

  • First-time installers without hands-on experience, because drilling, line handling, and evacuation can go wrong and cause leaks or damage.

  • Shoppers prioritizing long-term reliability and easy service, because reports mention early failures, shipping damage, and inconsistent support.

Be very aware of the voltage difference. Tried to return this and they wanted me to ship it across the country which would cost more than the unit itself. The company supposedly is 30 minutes from my house...
I mean it is listed, did you not see it? Not trying to be a pain, but shipping something in two large boxes and that weight would cost a fortune, some manufacturers just have agreed rates with some carriers.

I don't get how HVAC companies stay in business with deals like this... Let me think, do I want to pay $441, or $4,401?
Mine wanted $8000. Of course I needed some electrical but it was a 10ft run to the box, took me 6 hours maybe and $1200 with some tools i bought.

so the lines are not pre-charged? would have to hire a pro to fill them then, right?
No, most, if not all HVAC systems are precharged and you just have to use a vacuum on the lines and then release the refrigerant from the compressor/condenser. If you go longer on the lineset, you might need to add refrigerant to make up for the distance.

Some auto parts stores will let you rent the vacuum pump for free.

I have two 9k garvee units. No issues really. I didn't like the pads they came with so I bought my own for the concrete slab. I think they can be a little loud at night in the bedroom if you don't enable silent mode. You have to do it through the app because there isn't a button for it on the remote. That's my biggest complaint although connecting to wifi was giving me a hard time on one of them. Once connected, no issues.

Mini split start up use way less power, and coil fins are much, much larger so it cools faster
Mini splits also have heating, which is important to some people.

I watched a few youtube videos on installation. I concluded I am not handy enough to go through the entire process - my current best/cheapest option is getting a 2 hose portable AC.
Portable ACs are really inefficient. They've starting making a portable mini split now, which would work better, although it's probably more expensive. You should look into it.

Don't you need to flare the lines? That requires a specific tool. A quality flare tool can run in the $150 range.
A decent pro level vac will usually run around $300. I guess if you can manage with a harbor freight one, great, but if I'm doing multiple installs I'd probably go for something a bit higher end.
I don't see either of the pumps on their website saying it comes with the the gauge and manifold set for R410, which seems to be separate at $200. I've read you can skip the manifold set and just use a vacuum line (still around $100 for a good one) and you'd need a Vacrometer. It's also recommended to get a Schrader valve core removal tool. Those flare nuts should be tightened with a high quality torque wrench. You can manage without it, but it's better to use one. Then having a nitrogen tank with a regulator to purge the lines and test for leaks.
All of this stuff adds up. Can you potentially do it without a lot of this stuff? Maybe, but you're also risking leaks and other issues down the line.

I've spent a lot of time reading up on this stuff and watching videos of pros doing it. I hope your install lasts long term, but I'd rather spend extra on making sure the job is done as precisely as possible.
The lines are already flared unless you are going to cut them, if you do then you can flare yourself. I bought the harbor freight flaring tool originally but it was garbage so I bought one off amazon for 45 dollars (it works great) and got a manifold gauge for 40 and a vacuum pump for 100 (I could have rented the vacuum pump and possibly the manifold gauge for no cost). The vacuum/micron gauge (vacrometer as you call it) cost the most $180 (I wouldn't try to cheap out on this part but you could potentially borrow one if you know somebody). I rented a nitrogen tank but had to buy the regulator. Regulators are like 30 to 40. I don't remember what the cost of renting the nitrogen tank was but I needed to install 3 units and renting was more than I heard it would be online but not crazy. I didn't bother with a torque wrench. I did need to buy some fittings and misc other tools like a pipe bender (which I might have been able to do without honestly). There is definitely some cost but not like the prices that you are mentioning. Even with doing the electrical and installing disconnects, pouring concrete footings, electrical wire, breakers, all the tools I mentioned above, conduit, etc, it probably still cost me less than $1000 to install 3 units (not counting the units themselves). I could have saved a lot of money but I wanted to do it properly and have tools in case I wanted to do more installs in the future.

The only company who precharges the lines are Mr. cool and they do that so you don't need to vacuum or fill them. Most other companies like Garvee contain extra refrigerant inside the exterior unit itself which is enough for the mini split's operation + the default length of the lines it comes with. You have to vacuum these lines yourself before releasing the refrigerant from inside the unit. People buy Mr cool because it's easier, but it's like 4x to 5x more expensive.

I'm more curious how difficult it is to install 220v electrical.

(yea i'd suggest an electrician)

Edited to remove misinformation
If you've ever replaced an outlet or changed a breaker on your panel you'd be able to do it, just watch some youtube videos. If you're a complete novice or not handy, get an electrician. Also this unit says 115, make sure you wire the right circuit.

Boo, no wifi
I'm pretty sure these have wifi to connect to the app. It's not local though, you need the cloud. If you want to use Home Assistant completely locally, there is a way but it requires a dongle and you to set it up correctly.

First timer w alot of mechanical/automotive/electrical experience? Definitely can be a DIY job.
First timer w/little to no experience in hands on mechanical work- Definitely not. Just drilling the hole through the house alone and hitting the wrong area could results in a disaster for you.
I have a TON of plumbing/carpentry/electrical/mechanical experience and the hardest/annoying part for me was getting the lineset cover nice and straight on my house without kinking the copper lines.
I agree, I would say if you own power tools and use them regularly, can navigate around a breaker panel or have ever installed or replaced a power outlet, & know how to find studs in a wall (or you know someone like this who will help you), you can watch youtube videos and learn everything else you need to know.

You obviously didn't read enough. The line sets are pre flared. There is no flaring required. Sorry you're not confident enough in your abilities to save yourself thousands.

While I understand you should probably just be able to run it over there and drop it off, if you want you could also just rewire your disconnect and change the breaker and use it.
