This GarveeHome 12,000 BTU mini split is a budget heat pump that stands out for strong cooling, quiet operation, and lower power use than window or portable units. Real-world installs describe easy DIY setup for handy owners, with precharged condenser refrigerant, preflared lines, and heating that can hold up well in cold weather. The main drawbacks are the lack of WiFi on this model, the need for vacuuming and careful electrical work, and some concern about shipping damage or early failures. It looks like a solid value if you are comfortable with the install.

You can buy cans of R-410 like R-134a, much smaller than 25 libs just search for it
valid point , I did a multi zone system with 4 heads and a couple hundred feet of pipe so needed more than a can , just bit the bullet and got a big jug.

I don't think it's scare tactics as much as mis-interpreting the data.

You're spot-on that improper electrical work is likely the cause of A/C fires. People buying a costly "not Chinese" unit are much less likely to hack the install so would be less prone to electrical fires.

Poor quality control a/o inadequate parts could result in arcing/overheating/fire but the "let's make an extension cord out of Romex" crowd is far more worrisome.
Someone else suggested that a heavy duty cord wouldn't be enough. I said I suppose I could use romex but I won't use romex. After some further research, the cord will be plenty. Some folks just don't want to do anything that doesn't meet code no matter how overreaching said code is. If a mini split has a max draw of 1500 watts a receptacle will be fine even a 15 amp circuit.

Are you talking about some other type air conditioner? Such as a portable unit. These definitely do not require a window. My indoor part is mounted 6 inches below the ceiling on an outside wall.

Probably only draws 1000 watts at most

You could just use 12 gauge SJ cable if you're going with the plug in route. I've also seen people just drill through the wall at an interior outlet. They then mount the disconnect on the other side and tap into the circuit that way. That's probably the cleanest "rigged" way to do it.Before someone starts flaming me, I know that a dedicated circuit is supposed to be run. However, a lot of older homes had outlets near windows, so a window unit could be installed and plugged in. A 12k window unit will pull more amps than this mini split.

I'm more curious how difficult it is to install 220v electrical.

(yea i'd suggest an electrician)

Edited to remove misinformation
Need to use 2 breaker slots. Breakers have to be installed right depending on make and model of breaker box. Need to use a multimeter to confirm the breaker is producing 220v instead of 0v across the terminals. But this is the hardest part, and the rest is like any other circuit.

Just a heads up for people not running a dedicated new circuit. This needs 12 gauge wire and minimum 20 amp breaker. The nameplate on the unit I received states:

Max fuse size: 30 amp
Min Circuit Ampacity: 19.4

You can purge the lines with this line set flushing kit https://www.homedepot.com/p/Pione.../314537728 instead of a vacuum pump.

That's snake oil and classified as a refrigerant. You just as well purge it with nitrogen and cross your fingers. You need a vacuum pump.

Would it be wise to install this in a 600 sq ft garage for heating and cooling?

Put one in 4 months ago. Arguably the best upgrade we've ever made. We have it in our master. We do have 2 5 seer units in house. But we live in Arizona and bedroom faces west. My AC bill was crazy. Put an 18,000 btu in the room which is 800 sq ft. Worth every penny.

I thought about buying one of these until I saw in installation prices. When I lived in Japan 10 years ago, I bought one of these for $300 brand new (AC + heat pump), and the installation was $100. It's silly to me that this 40-year-old technology is being marketed as new in America and carrying a huge premium, even though it's existed in Asia since the 1980s.
