I don't want to start a whole debate here, but 3D printing as a whole was built and pushed forward by open-source communities and passionate makers.Bambu came along and undoubtedly packaged everything in a way that pushed the entire industry into a new era.
However, they've also been increasingly locking things down and going after parts of the open-source and tinkering communities whose efforts helped create the ecosystem they're now benefiting from
.There was a period when nothing on the market could really compete with Bambu, but the industry has since caught up, and there are now several offerings that are just as good in many areas.
Bambu is still the king of ecosystem integration and the walled-garden experience. Everything works cohesively, but it's also very locked down. As for customer service, my personal experience has been only okay, though I've read far too many horror stories from others. Of course, ymmv

ok, so what's the issue with it being "locked down"? I mean, if it works cohesively, then what's the issue? either it's good or it's not. or is there something I'm missing here?

For me it works is not enough. Companies can't just take from everyone and actively going against people whose labor they are selling.
Going against open source is big no for me. Does not sit right with my principles.I love contributing to open source, and I can't be with such company, that's just me. I am speaking with my wallet. I can't support anti consumer companies.
Also being lock down is not very simple, it's not just software, it could be the filament you use. Currently users get warning on app regarding quality if they use third party filament. There is nothing stopping them to completely block them in future. We all see what normal paper printer companies do now.
If these dont bother you, go for it, these are good printers.

I just don't get what the issue is. "Going against open source is big no for me." --> but I'm hearing nothing that actually explains what that means.

"Currently users get warning on app regarding quality if they use third party filament. There is nothing stopping them to completely block them in future." --> so....they're doing nothing actually wrong, but we're going to hate on them because, let me understand this correctly ---- they MIGHT do something at some point in the future?

In a world full of clearly articulated, actual grievances.... this sounds like a whole lot of nothing.

Like I said, I really don't want to get into the details and start a whole debate here. If the things I mentioned aren't an issue for you, or you don't feel like doing your own research on them (I promise it would only take a quick Google search), then Bambu is probably perfect for you.

At the end of the day, they make great printers and offer one of the most polished user experiences on the market.

Whatever you say, boss. You're tiptoeing around something, being all weird and vague about it. And I'm asking for concrete examples of why they're bad, and I get a lot of nothings in response. If there is a legitimate cause for this, then you've done it more harm for it than any bad actor ever could.

The problem with giving specific examples is that Bambu fanboys tend to flood the thread defending the company, and I really don't want to turn this into another endless argument. If you simply search for "Bambu vs open source," you'll find plenty of articles from reputable sources, along with numerous Reddit discussions. You can make up your own mind on how you feel about the company and its direction.Personally, Bambu won't see another dime from me aside from any spare parts I may need to keep my existing printers running from the time when I still respected them.

So, nothing then.

You come to a thread, first post...you call out how awful they are. And when you're pressed for examples to back up your unsubstantiated claim, you tell someone to go google it for themselves.

And mind you, I've been civil...nay, downright pleasant asking about this up until now. But you did it, you provoked a response.

That's not how the burden of proof works. Telling someone to go do the homework themselves just makes you a troll.

So, because I didn't immediately write you a sourced essay in a mind you freaking Slickdeals comment, not even Reddit, I'm a troll?I made an opinionated comment, not a peer-reviewed paper. If you disagree, that's fine. And no, "go Google it" isn't me dodging. This topic has been discussed to death. The information is out there if you're genuinely interested, instead of just looking for an argument. You seem perfectly capable of finding my comment, replying to it, and demanding sources, so I'm sure you're also capable of typing "Bambu open source controversy" into a search bar.If none of those concerns matter to you, great. Buy a Bambu and enjoy it. They make excellent printers. My opinion isn't stopping you.

"So, because I didn't immediately write you a sourced essay in a mind you freaking Slickdeals comment, not even Reddit, I'm a troll?"

No, it's because when you were given something like three different opportunities to give literally anything meaningful, you dodged the question like you've had PR training. Not even a single nugget other than "they MIGHT do something bad SOMEDAY in the future." That's being a troll.

You made the claim, you can't back it up, and now you're getting upset that you've been called out about it. Good.

I already told you my reason multiple times: their direction regarding open source and ecosystem lock-in.You don't have to agree with it, but pretending I never gave a reason just because you don't find it compelling is a bit disingenuous. For me, "the printer works" isn't enough. I don't like where the company is heading, so I'm choosing to vote with my wallet. If those concerns don't matter to you, then buy a Bambu and enjoy it. They're great printers. We simply have different priorities.
