Nike's Vaporfly 4 is a carbon plated racing shoe built for half and full marathons, with the biggest payoff at faster paces and a very light feel. The shoe is described as especially useful for race day, speed work, and runners with efficient form, and it can even work for long walks once broken in. The main tradeoffs are that it feels awkward or less efficient at jog pace, is not suited to daily training, and the lightweight build may wear quickly. At this price, it reads as a specialized marathon shoe with limited everyday use.

I was a firm believer in these shoes for years as an avid runner. However, I recently developed a stress fracture in my ankle that my orthopedist swears are attributed to running in these sneakers. Once I recover, I am going to avoid carbon plated shoes. Just my experience I recognize that.
How often were you running in carbon plated super shoes?

I'm at about 2-3x a week…all workout days and races. May try these VF4's out. I am down to one fresh pair of VF3's after buying a few pairs on closeouts. Good for racing to 100-150mi but fine for workouts to 300mi (feels soft but not as much pop).

Ive seen and heard this comment many times from runners. Whats the problem with this? Yes, they are not designed for such use and you do not get the benefit of the carbon plate, and depending on the shoe it could be less comfortable than a shoe without a plate, but why not and who cares? Tons of people wear clothing more for fashion than for function. People also own cars designed for the track and/or 'rugged' SUV's and never race them or take them off-road. Also shoes go on sale, so a plated shoe doesnt necessarily cost more than a non-plated shoe. For running, I didnt like the instability of the New Balance Super Comp Trainer V1's when I had them, and they were a bit big and clunky, but they were so squishy with a super airy upper, they were fantastic for walking or standing around particularly in warmer months. I liked them so much for walking, I bought a 2nd pair just for that purpose. Maybe I did it wrong, but I am glad I didnt listen to the people saying not to wear plated shoes for walking.
Super comps and vaporflys are two entirely different shoesEither way, yes this is America and it is your right and privilege to wear whatever you choose to pay for, including buying vaporflys for walkingIt's also my right to point that it's foolishIf you buy 44" boggers to drive around the city it's equally foolish, but still your right.

Quick note - these make ZERO sense for training. Race only shoes to go faster. There's no prize for training 2 min faster on a 5 mile day.

I'm in, for my first pair of race shoes. I currently train 20-30mi/wk in Boston 13's, and hopefully this purchase motivates me to do some 1/2's this fall

No driving around the city with 44" tires is a real asshole move because huge vehicles are statistically much more likely to kill people, especially children. Walking in racing shoes is just kind of wasted money but doesn't directly put people in danger. Very different things.

The general rule: If you finish the distance without the running form you started with, stay away from full-on "race" shoes and any shoe that will punish you for heel strikes. If your form breaks down or you're just a heel striker, leave shoes like this alone. If you want to know, buy a pair . . . if you've put 25 miles on them and there is little to no wear to the heel then you're good to go. If you're a heel striker, I imagine the heel foam will be worn down by mile 10.

I hear you but ZERO? Using these on an occasional speed day is perfectly fine. As a daily trainer, probably not a good idea.

Nice! Decent mileage. You already know this but I'll remind you . . . you want some motivation to do some halves this fall, sign up and tell a few people.

It's usually overuse (eg. Increasing miles or intensity too fast). You also should only use these during races or select hard workouts. Not on every run.

Agreed with a 4hr marathon. I don't think the benefit of a carbon plates is even seen till mid 7 min miles. Otherwise, they just feel strange and wear very quickly.
It depends more on weight and force output than any specific pace.

well.. in all generalities the guidance is often verbalized as a pace, since it often has the appropriate stride and force. I'm not gonna overthink the mechanics of it here.. but I can certainly feel the benefits of the foot rolling forward at faster speeds. At jog pace it doesn't feel right, other than the shoe being really light.
