AT&T prepaid's annual plan stands out for direct AT&T coverage, 5G Plus access, unlimited talk and text, and 10GB of hotspot data at $240 upfront for new lines. The plan also gets credit for mid tier network priority and a simple annual setup once activated. The main drawbacks are the fine print and limits, taxes and fees can raise the total, the offer is new customer only, and the 16GB high speed bucket with 128 kbps fallback can feel tight. Canada and Mexico benefits are limited, so it fits best when AT&T coverage matters more than extras.

  • The plan can work out to a lower effective monthly cost when taxes and fees are avoided using discounted prepaid cards.

  • The plan includes 5G+ service at the advertised $240 upfront rate for the 12-month term.

  • Hotspot performance can be decent for some use cases before any throttling kicks in.

  • The plan may be a practical option for travelers who need AT&T coverage footprint rather than relying on other networks.

  • Taxes and fees are not included in the $240 upfront figure, which can add roughly $18 to the total cost.

  • Throttled hotspot or data speeds can become nearly unusable after the data limit is reached.

  • International use in Canada and Mexico may not include data or roaming, which can be a downgrade for travel.

  • Initial signup can fail repeatedly due to payment declines, and customer service may not resolve the issue.

I've had the $300 yearly plan for a couple of years now. I pay with prepaid cards, and I don't have to pay taxes and fees. It's $300 flat except I buy prepaid cards when they go on sale for 10-15% off. I'm in Tennessee.
This is the way. Comes out to $255 a year for grandfather plan.

Yeah and kicking their 10-15 year loyal customers to the curb by force retiring our plans and breaking their uncarrier promise with no rate hikes. We're one of the TMO refugees looking at other plans.
If your on a $45+ plan look at Verizon's visible plans

So it's actually $38/month? How do they charge you for taxes and fees if you're paying $240 up front?
$18 was for the entire year in my case. I switched to US Mobile last year, but had ATT Prepaid annual plan for many years before that. The first year I had ATT Prepaid and got a introductory offer it looked like it would be the stated price during checkout, but they actually only invoiced and charged my credit card 99 cents for the sim card. That is all my invoice email showed. Then during activation I was sent a new invoice that had the stated plan price PLUS taxes and fees for the year. I was shocked, but was already committed. In the following years, the normal plan price was $300, but I always had to pay another $18 or $20 for taxes and fees (I don't recall the exact amount). I always paid with prepaid cards bought at a discount. Did not pay tax on the prepaid cards, but the balance to prepay ATT still had the taxes and fees added, so I didn't avoid them.

That was my experience. I feel the need to warn people since it caught me off guard the first year. It sounds like there are plenty of people who aren't charged taxes and fees, probably because their state doesn't subject cell phone service to sales tax or 911 funding fees. (other companies include them in the state price to keep things simple.) Maybe it has changed, but I had to pay extra for taxes and fees up through a couple years ago. Do your research.

I was considering switching back to ATT, but the deal needs to be just a bit sweeter.

EDIT: In my case the fees were state Sales Tax and 911 funding fee. It looks like AT&T may have added their own made up "cost recovery fee" of $2.63 per service payment as of 6/22/26 https://www.att.com/legal/terms.o...edule.html (scroll down to AT&T Prepaid Recurring Fees)

This wasn't my experience, I had ATT Prepaid, and was told that even the $300/12 plan was new customer only. So I bailed for T-Mo. No regrets so far except I get FAR more scam calls on T-Mo even using their scam shield or whatever it's called.
That's weird because I keep getting notifications from AT&T to update my existing plan to this $300 plan. I'm planning to try it soon. I have friends on T-mobile and they say it's not good for where I live. They've contacted T-mobile and they tell them that their towers are overloaded since they have so many customers now. I guess they'll upgrade the towers someday or it'll get better as people leave and relieve the traffic.

I've gotten this same plan at the $300 rate, but I've only paid $285 by buying a $300 AT&T prepaid card at Target, paid for with a 5% discount using a Target Circle Card. If the same thing works with this deal, you could buy a $240 card (or whatever combination of card values gets you to that value) for $228. I haven't ever paid any taxes or fees on top of the $300/yr, but I did recently get a text message from AT&T saying "Beginning 6/22/2026, the AT&T Administrative & Regulatory Recovery Fee of $2.63 will be applied on AT&T Prepaid service payments (excludes payments in select locations)". No idea whether that's per transaction, per month, or whatever other frequency. Next time I need to renew, I'll just get the prepaid card for the exact amount of the plan and then pay any fees above that with a credit card.

It's true the customer service is beyond bad, but once you have the plan working you're not going to have to interact with support.

I'm wondering about the same Q as I'm about to pull the trigger on getting out of AT&T postpaid. At one point, I thought AT&T prepaid was best value for my area, but with US Mobile in the mix now, AT&T Prepaid seems to have lost a lot of shine.

Recommenations? I do want the plan to include international calling (at least Canada, UK) and some free or reasonable roaming in Canada, UK / Europe, and Australia.
