AT&T prepaid's annual plan stands out for direct AT&T coverage, 5G Plus access, unlimited talk and text, and 10GB of hotspot data at $240 upfront for new lines. The plan also gets credit for mid tier network priority and a simple annual setup once activated. The main drawbacks are the fine print and limits, taxes and fees can raise the total, the offer is new customer only, and the 16GB high speed bucket with 128 kbps fallback can feel tight. Canada and Mexico benefits are limited, so it fits best when AT&T coverage matters more than extras.

  • The plan can work out to a lower effective monthly cost when taxes and fees are avoided using discounted prepaid cards.

  • The plan includes 5G+ service at the advertised $240 upfront rate for the 12-month term.

  • Hotspot performance can be decent for some use cases before any throttling kicks in.

  • The plan may be a practical option for travelers who need AT&T coverage footprint rather than relying on other networks.

  • Taxes and fees are not included in the $240 upfront figure, which can add roughly $18 to the total cost.

  • Throttled hotspot or data speeds can become nearly unusable after the data limit is reached.

  • International use in Canada and Mexico may not include data or roaming, which can be a downgrade for travel.

  • Initial signup can fail repeatedly due to payment declines, and customer service may not resolve the issue.

FYI Taxes and "Fees" not included. At checkout they will only charge you for the sim card, then upon activation will charge you the $240 plus taxes and fees you may or may not be expecting. Taxes and fees vary by state.
Not saying it isn't a good deal. I had AT&T annual prepaid for years and was happy with it. I just had to figure an extra $18 for taxes and fees into the calculation.
Buy ATT gift cards and you avoid the taxes and fees. Had ATT prepaid for years and this worked.

Some people need the customer service. I'd love to get the referral bonus for my family members, but they could not survive without being able to walk into a store and physically hand someone their phone to fix their issue.

Also if something happens to your phone while traveling it is nice to be able to pick up a decent ATT locked phone for $50 at Walmart, swap sims and continue on. Based on my research it seems hit or miss whether a locked prepaid ATT phone will work on US Mobile/Dark Star.

If this deal were $20 cheaper or one of the free/discounted phones were appealing to me, I'd probably switch back for a year. I would not stick around for the following year at full price.

Check Krogers website or in store as well they've put them on sale occasionally. So doesn't Dollar General.

I use to have ATT prepaid. Service was good but security was horrible. Now that every bank account and retirement account and email gets routed through through your phone, I think it's important to have decent phone security. Accessing your account or porting away is a snap. The software is like 20 years old.

This is not the true price, cause there are after sale gotcha fees: Emergency 911, Universal, City, State, County...
Better off going with an mvno like us mobile, where they use all 3 towers & the price you see is the price you pays.

Aldo worth noting that US Mobile is an NVMO. Which means in high traffic situations your data will be deprioritized behind direct AT&T customers (And Cricket customers, which AT&T owns).
