This bundle is mainly a cheap way to get an iPhone 12 with a year of unlimited talk and text and 12GB of data to use over the full year. The phone is brand new in the box, and the total still looks attractive versus buying a used iPhone 12 outright. The main catches are the 64GB fixed storage, the older 2020 hardware, and the fact that the phone stays locked until after 12 full months of active paid service. TracFone also can deactivate dormant lines, so it works best as a backup or light-use phone.

  • Travelers or backup-phone users who need a spare line, because the unlimited talk and text can sit idle while the 12GB data is stretched across a year.

  • People wanting a cheap iPhone for a year of service, because the bundle undercuts buying the phone separately and can still unlock later.

  • Light app users who mostly stay on Wi‑Fi, because 64GB storage is enough when you rarely take photos or videos.

  • Tinkerers chasing a jailbreakable iOS version, because the phones can arrive on a jailbreakable release.

I don't think this phone will automatically unlock as they did in the past. The new policy says "upon request" multiple times. It's unclear whether filling out the online form will count as a request or if you will need to call on day 366: https://www.tfwunlockpolicy.com/
That could be the case. I have no issues calling the unlocking department to unlock and have had to do so for phones that should have automatically unlocked under the old policy, but didn't. If it's all by request now, they are creating a lot of unnecessary work for themselves. I guess we'll start finding out about 6 months from now.

I just now called TF unlock dept 1-888-442-5102. My question was if I activate a TF with 365 days of minutes that came "free" with the phone - not on a refill card - on July 28 specifically when would the phone be eligible for unlock. The CSR stated eligible on July 28 next year (2027). I then asked to confirm that the minutes that came with the purchase of the phone, not on a refill card count as minutes for unlocking and they said yes. I asked if I needed to call them to unlock on the day of expiration (the 28th) or the day after. They said either day but best to try on the exact expiration day the 28th.

Now call three more times, and see if you get the same exact response.

I bet you won't...!

I hear exactly what you're saying and I agree.

I'll just wait until July 2027. It is what it is, and is whatever it will be, and another call won't change anything.

It's no extra work on their part. You seem to be entirely mistaken on how these companies operate.

Most people will never unlock a phone. (They don't know what it means, they don't care -- they buy a phone with the company they want a plan with.) Removing automatic unlocks allows the company to potentially earn money by ensuring future lock-in.

They have the same amount of customer service reps (or less!), with the same al-slop menu run-around. Higher call volumes simply means it takes longer for the CUSTOMER to get what they need -- and a greater chance you (the customer!) says "screw this!" and hang up. Remember, the company already has your money.

(And you're trying to unlock a "spare" underpowered, probably unsupported phone in 2027, which was released in Oct 2020. How much is your time worth? Will you sit there on a phone call for an hour? Two hours? Three hours? When will you give up, saying "it's really not worth it". There is a limit, and they want to know.)

(You don't like it and threaten to leave? Go ahead. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. There are 20 new customers waiting behind you -- all eager to use the deprioritized network that's been paid for 20x over.....all on handhelds entirely paid for by sponsorships, adverts, and data mining (not like the old days where handhelds were a serious cost). Verizon owns 1/3rd of the market. You'll be back.)

The same 8 hours of labor is being performed by the same limited pool CSRs, regardless of what they're doing. YOU have to wait, not them. Being proactive regarding phone unlocks is more work FOR YOU. And you keep spending your money with them, so it must not be all that bad...!

This is a phone you can use for 2 years and still get $100+ for it used. People on FB Marketplace or wherever love the iPhones.

Who needs al-slop for phone calls? 🤣
You get the AI models becos it has more ram. You then disable the AI as my post states. AI is definitely better for voice dictation stuff in CarPlay mode when driving at high speed keeping your hands on the wheel.

The iphone 15 has 6GB of vram and comes with USB-C. The iphone 14 has 6GB of vram. The 13 has 4GB vram as does the iphone 12. I have an iphone 13 currently that is a less than a year old.
I have an iPhone 13 and 14 plus as well. On android I am finding that 4GB is terrible and 8GB is stress free. Another bad thing about tracfone is you can't use it overseas that's why metro by T-Mobile is better as you can use it for wifi calling as it's T-Mobile.

If it was 128gb, it might be worth it for an iPod like device/Wi-Fi only device. I have an SE2 that I use for music purposes only. The battery is starting to degrade, but besides that, it still gets the job done.

Yo, this is a genuinely slick deal for people who don't have much to work with in the first place. The privilege on here is just absurd sometimes.

Must be nice to have started so high up or did you just forget?

I don't use my mobile telephone at all when driving. And you shouldn't either. Driving distracted is only asking for trouble. Focus on the road and controlling your multi-tonne machine at rollercoaster speeds.

It's actually a pretty meager deal -- a six-year-old phone? (i'd be concerned with degradation due to warehousing) with a paltry 64gb of storage? no options to expand the storage? and at $144? Sorry, but hard disagree.

There are 2025 android phones with 128gb storage, microSD card slot, 8gb ram, (and sometimes even a stylus!)....for $40-100, it's a really hard sell with this fruity device. Sure, maybe they're "not the same". Both make phone calls just fine....!
