"Is the 365 unlimited package for the whole year?"
Actually...yes. Surprising! I know!
Usually Track Phone has a 1500/min per year scheme where it's a meager amount, unlike other countries with normally generous limits. This package has a pity 12gb of data for the 12 months, but unlimited talk and text.
Some might argue that's fine, they're on WiFi most of the time -- but hey, I don't need a car since I have mass transit. I don't need to buy food if I'm under a meal plan. And so on. It's amazing what you don't need when someone else is providing it, like someone else's network for a MOBILE device.
Some argue these are great for a "spare/backup phone". I can't tell you a single time I had something go wrong with my primary device, in such that I needed an active spare sitting around - but you do you...! Some of us grew up in the era of "we have a single corded phone mounted to the wall, no such thing as an answering machine." We survived without a magic rectangle surgically attached to our hands, and so can you. I believe in you.
"When does it unlock?"
AFTER 12 full months of ACTIVE PAID SERVICE. On paid month 13, you can request the device to unlock. Yes, it used to be different. Elections have consequences. I'd say file a complaint with the FCC, but you might be put on a list. And I might too for instigating pro-consumer action. In 2026, the squeaky wheel doesn't get the grease --> it gets replaced. (Just look up the Lattimer Mining Protest of 1897. And that was 129 years ago.)
Do you frequently buy locked phones, wait a year, then use the phone on another service? Sounds tedious. Why not just buy a phone for that service provider? Even if it's marginally more expensive, it can't be all that bad. You know what the kids say -- BUY ONCE CRY ONCE!
...until Planned Obsolescence makes you rebuy in 2-3 years! (Seriously, these things rarely last until month 36 of daily gentle use.) And this "I"-Phone was released in October of 2020. That's a six-year-old device. Hope it didn't degrade while in storage.
"Why don't they have a good referral bonus anymore?"
A scheme for new customers. Like with all good things, too many people abused it. So, Track Phone cut the bonus to a negligible amount.
Community Reviews
This bundle is mainly a cheap way to get an iPhone 12 with a year of unlimited talk and text and 12GB of data to use over the full year. The phone is brand new in the box, and the total still looks attractive versus buying a used iPhone 12 outright. The main catches are the 64GB fixed storage, the older 2020 hardware, and the fact that the phone stays locked until after 12 full months of active paid service. TracFone also can deactivate dormant lines, so it works best as a backup or light-use phone.

I bet you won't...!

I'll just wait until July 2027. It is what it is, and is whatever it will be, and another call won't change anything.
Most people will never unlock a phone. (They don't know what it means, they don't care -- they buy a phone with the company they want a plan with.) Removing automatic unlocks allows the company to potentially earn money by ensuring future lock-in.
They have the same amount of customer service reps (or less!), with the same al-slop menu run-around. Higher call volumes simply means it takes longer for the CUSTOMER to get what they need -- and a greater chance you (the customer!) says "screw this!" and hang up. Remember, the company already has your money.
(And you're trying to unlock a "spare" underpowered, probably unsupported phone in 2027, which was released in Oct 2020. How much is your time worth? Will you sit there on a phone call for an hour? Two hours? Three hours? When will you give up, saying "it's really not worth it". There is a limit, and they want to know.)
(You don't like it and threaten to leave? Go ahead. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. There are 20 new customers waiting behind you -- all eager to use the deprioritized network that's been paid for 20x over.....all on handhelds entirely paid for by sponsorships, adverts, and data mining (not like the old days where handhelds were a serious cost). Verizon owns 1/3rd of the market. You'll be back.)
The same 8 hours of labor is being performed by the same limited pool CSRs, regardless of what they're doing. YOU have to wait, not them. Being proactive regarding phone unlocks is more work FOR YOU. And you keep spending your money with them, so it must not be all that bad...!

Must be nice to have started so high up or did you just forget?

There are 2025 android phones with 128gb storage, microSD card slot, 8gb ram, (and sometimes even a stylus!)....for $40-100, it's a really hard sell with this fruity device. Sure, maybe they're "not the same". Both make phone calls just fine....!
