"Is the 365 unlimited package for the whole year?"
Actually...yes. Surprising! I know!
Usually Track Phone has a 1500/min per year scheme where it's a meager amount, unlike other countries with normally generous limits. This package has a pity 12gb of data for the 12 months, but unlimited talk and text.
Some might argue that's fine, they're on WiFi most of the time -- but hey, I don't need a car since I have mass transit. I don't need to buy food if I'm under a meal plan. And so on. It's amazing what you don't need when someone else is providing it, like someone else's network for a MOBILE device.
Some argue these are great for a "spare/backup phone". I can't tell you a single time I had something go wrong with my primary device, in such that I needed an active spare sitting around - but you do you...! Some of us grew up in the era of "we have a single corded phone mounted to the wall, no such thing as an answering machine." We survived without a magic rectangle surgically attached to our hands, and so can you. I believe in you.
"When does it unlock?"
AFTER 12 full months of ACTIVE PAID SERVICE. On paid month 13, you can request the device to unlock. Yes, it used to be different. Elections have consequences. I'd say file a complaint with the FCC, but you might be put on a list. And I might too for instigating pro-consumer action. In 2026, the squeaky wheel doesn't get the grease --> it gets replaced. (Just look up the Lattimer Mining Protest of 1897. And that was 129 years ago.)
Do you frequently buy locked phones, wait a year, then use the phone on another service? Sounds tedious. Why not just buy a phone for that service provider? Even if it's marginally more expensive, it can't be all that bad. You know what the kids say -- BUY ONCE CRY ONCE!
...until Planned Obsolescence makes you rebuy in 2-3 years! (Seriously, these things rarely last until month 36 of daily gentle use.) And this "I"-Phone was released in October of 2020. That's a six-year-old device. Hope it didn't degrade while in storage.
"Why don't they have a good referral bonus anymore?"
A scheme for new customers. Like with all good things, too many people abused it. So, Track Phone cut the bonus to a negligible amount.

This bundle is mainly a cheap way to get an iPhone 12 with a year of unlimited talk and text and 12GB of data to use over the full year. The phone is brand new in the box, and the total still looks attractive versus buying a used iPhone 12 outright. The main catches are the 64GB fixed storage, the older 2020 hardware, and the fact that the phone stays locked until after 12 full months of active paid service. TracFone also can deactivate dormant lines, so it works best as a backup or light-use phone.
Travelers or backup-phone users who need a spare line, because the unlimited talk and text can sit idle while the 12GB data is stretched across a year.
People wanting a cheap iPhone for a year of service, because the bundle undercuts buying the phone separately and can still unlock later.
Light app users who mostly stay on Wi‑Fi, because 64GB storage is enough when you rarely take photos or videos.
Tinkerers chasing a jailbreakable iOS version, because the phones can arrive on a jailbreakable release.
People who need a dependable primary phone without service interruptions, because inactivity can trigger deactivation and jeopardize unlock eligibility.
Anyone who wants a modern long-term daily driver, because the iPhone 12 is a six-year-old model with aging support and uncertain battery longevity.
Storage-hungry photographers or video users, because 64GB fills quickly and cannot be expanded.
Heavy data users who expect monthly flexibility, because the 12GB allowance can disappear in a month and leave no data for the rest of the year.

FYI, the warranty info seems to be correct this time, unlike the 12 Minis last year. So no call to Apple at least.
There are 2025 android phones with 128gb storage, microSD card slot, 8gb ram, (and sometimes even a stylus!)....for $40-100, it's a really hard sell with this fruity device. Sure, maybe they're "not the same". Both make phone calls just fine....!
You just don't understand why its a good deal and that's okay. Some people are going to view it as an awesome one... Its not about the phone. It could be any phone as long as it works and as long as you know that for one year you're not going to be out of service at all no matter what happens at work that week.
