"Is the 365 unlimited package for the whole year?"
Actually...yes. Surprising! I know!
Usually Track Phone has a 1500/min per year scheme where it's a meager amount, unlike other countries with normally generous limits. This package has a pity 12gb of data for the 12 months, but unlimited talk and text.
Some might argue that's fine, they're on WiFi most of the time -- but hey, I don't need a car since I have mass transit. I don't need to buy food if I'm under a meal plan. And so on. It's amazing what you don't need when someone else is providing it, like someone else's network for a MOBILE device.
Some argue these are great for a "spare/backup phone". I can't tell you a single time I had something go wrong with my primary device, in such that I needed an active spare sitting around - but you do you...! Some of us grew up in the era of "we have a single corded phone mounted to the wall, no such thing as an answering machine." We survived without a magic rectangle surgically attached to our hands, and so can you. I believe in you.
"When does it unlock?"
AFTER 12 full months of ACTIVE PAID SERVICE. On paid month 13, you can request the device to unlock. Yes, it used to be different. Elections have consequences. I'd say file a complaint with the FCC, but you might be put on a list. And I might too for instigating pro-consumer action. In 2026, the squeaky wheel doesn't get the grease --> it gets replaced. (Just look up the Lattimer Mining Protest of 1897. And that was 129 years ago.)
Do you frequently buy locked phones, wait a year, then use the phone on another service? Sounds tedious. Why not just buy a phone for that service provider? Even if it's marginally more expensive, it can't be all that bad. You know what the kids say -- BUY ONCE CRY ONCE!
...until Planned Obsolescence makes you rebuy in 2-3 years! (Seriously, these things rarely last until month 36 of daily gentle use.) And this "I"-Phone was released in October of 2020. That's a six-year-old device. Hope it didn't degrade while in storage.
"Why don't they have a good referral bonus anymore?"
A scheme for new customers. Like with all good things, too many people abused it. So, Track Phone cut the bonus to a negligible amount.

This bundle is mainly a cheap way to get an iPhone 12 with a year of unlimited talk and text and 12GB of data to use over the full year. The phone is brand new in the box, and the total still looks attractive versus buying a used iPhone 12 outright. The main catches are the 64GB fixed storage, the older 2020 hardware, and the fact that the phone stays locked until after 12 full months of active paid service. TracFone also can deactivate dormant lines, so it works best as a backup or light-use phone.
Common Questions (6)
The phone unlocks after 12 full months of active paid service, with some comments saying you may need to request the unlock on or after day 365/366. The old 60-day unlock policy no longer applies to this deal.
Yes. TracFone can deactivate smartphones after 6 consecutive months with no voice, text, or data usage, so you need to actually make calls, send texts, or use data to keep the line active.
It has 64GB of non-expandable storage, so it can fill up quickly with apps, photos, videos, and iOS updates. It is best suited for light use or as a backup phone rather than a media-heavy daily driver.
It includes 365 days of unlimited talk and text, plus 12GB of data for the full year. The data is a yearly bucket, so you can use it all early or spread it out over the 12 months.
Yes. The phone can be used mostly on Wi‑Fi, and one workaround is to use it as a hotspot during the unlock period. If you do not care about unlocking, the included service still comes with the phone, but the line must remain active.
The advertised price is $144, but taxes and fees can bring the total to about $157.92 depending on location. One Virginia order added about $12.45 in tax.

It's e-waste out the door, even if one was fine with a six-year-old device (i'd be worried about degradation sitting on a warehouse shelf!)
This is a six-year-old device. Today.
Sitting on a shelf, not being used? That's not good for the battery, at all. I'd have my doubts as to the longevity of the product. And who knows what else has degraded due to "Planned Obsolescence"? Maybe a random chip or adhesive or whatnot. These things are specifically engineered to fall apart after so long.
