This bundle is mainly a cheap way to get an iPhone 12 with a year of unlimited talk and text and 12GB of data to use over the full year. The phone is brand new in the box, and the total still looks attractive versus buying a used iPhone 12 outright. The main catches are the 64GB fixed storage, the older 2020 hardware, and the fact that the phone stays locked until after 12 full months of active paid service. TracFone also can deactivate dormant lines, so it works best as a backup or light-use phone.

This deal here is worse than their iPhone 13 deal from last year where they were giving away phones after you purchased a 2-month plan. Sucks that they lost their way and are now back to the same ole, same ole BS...

FAQ for these Track Phone posts---------------"Is the 365 unlimited package for the whole year?"Actually...yes. Surprising! I know!Usually Track Phone has a 1500/min per year scheme where it's a meager amount, unlike other countries with normally generous limits. This package has a pity 12gb of data for the 12 months, but unlimited talk and text. Some might argue that's fine, they're on WiFi most of the time -- but hey, I don't need a car since I have mass transit. I don't need to buy food if I'm under a meal plan. And so on. It's amazing what you don't need when someone else is providing it, like someone else's network for a MOBILE device. Some argue these are great for a "spare/backup phone". I can't tell you a single time I had something go wrong with my primary device, in such that I needed an active spare sitting around - but you do you...! Some of us grew up in the era of "we have a single corded phone mounted to the wall, no such thing as an answering machine." We survived without a magic rectangle surgically attached to our hands, and so can you. I believe in you."When does it unlock?"AFTER 12 full months of ACTIVE PAID SERVICE. On paid month 13, you can request the device to unlock. Yes, it used to be different. Elections have consequences. I'd say file a complaint with the FCC, but you might be put on a list. And I might too for instigating pro-consumer action. In 2026, the squeaky wheel doesn't get the grease --> it gets replaced. (Just look up the Lattimer Mining Protest of 1897. And that was 129 years ago.)Do you frequently buy locked phones, wait a year, then use the phone on another service? Sounds tedious. Why not just buy a phone for that service provider? Even if it's marginally more expensive, it can't be all that bad. You know what the kids say -- BUY ONCE CRY ONCE!...until Planned Obsolescence makes you rebuy in 2-3 years! (Seriously, these things rarely last until month 36 of daily gentle use.) And this "I"-Phone was released in October of 2020. That's a six-year-old device. Hope it didn't degrade while in storage. "Why don't they have a good referral bonus anymore?"A scheme for new customers. Like with all good things, too many people abused it. So, Track Phone cut the bonus to a negligible amount.
I think you should be a columnist. This is decent writing chops and I thought this was a good read 👍🏾😁

I must have missed that deal. I did get the one where you could buy a 3 month plan for $50, and they gave you $200 off. So it was $289+50-200=$139 (+taxes). Yes, that was a smoking hot deal. I bought a bunch of those, and they unlocked after 60 days under the old policy. That was a mistake on their part though, and they fixed it rather quickly. It was supposed to be 3 months of the $50 plan, not the 3 month plan that cost $50 total.

Can anyone tell me if the Talk/Text will continue to work if the data is used up? Will I be charged for data? If need be I can buy a card but I want this as just a phone to give to my 11 year old. I am not looking for something she can stay on line unlimited.

Oh ok, yeah, that's actually the deal I'm talking a/b so I must've got my details screwed up somewhere due to a lack of recollection. Total Wireless also had an offer similar to that which predates the Tracfone deal that I also took advantage of as well, but you were paying $20 more. However, I made off like a bandit, buying 5x of them in total from Total Wireless, selling 3x on eBay after they unlocked and keeping 2x. Then I bought 2x from Tracfone which was the cheaper option, but I sold those 2x for my mom since the proceeds of the sale I presented as a Xmas gift to her. Keep this in mind: each phone sold for no less than $350 on eBay and 3x of them I sold for $375, talk a/b flipping for a profit 😁.

Yeah, data is finite while talk/text is unlimited according to this deal.

On Android, talk/SMS will continue to work after data is used up. MMS and RCS will not. It's probably best to turn off RCS for a plan like this anyway, because RCS will use your data. I don't know if you can force SMS on iOS though. Someone else will need to answer that. I assume that you can.

I estimate the plan is worth about $60 give or take. So you're getting an iPhone 12 for about $90-100 after taxes. Unlocked after a year. It currently trades for 200-250 unlocked in mint condition on swappa. So essentially cheap service with a "free" phone if you can keep it in piece for a year. Not a bad deal. Who's buying the iPhone 12 anymore though? Such an old phone at this point

It has 64gb of storage, non-upgradeable. That's a deal-breaker. You'll have space for the OS and only a minimal amount of applications. Any images or video you take with the device will need to be constantly off-loaded, depending on how fast you generate media + how many applications you have + how big the next update wants to be.

It's e-waste out the door, even if one was fine with a six-year-old device (i'd be worried about degradation sitting on a warehouse shelf!)

64gb is only enough for someone that doesn't use the camera or only a handful of apps. Battery should be fine. Apple batteries are pretty robust. There's a good chance this will be obsolete before the battery is a problem

Can i buy and use the sim on my existing tracfone and unlock after an year, basically activate SIM and use on another phone ?, thanks
Which phone are you trying to unlock? It's generally not recommended to move SIM cards around. But you can activate the iPhone 12 with a transfer of your current service, then transfer service back to your current phone. So you will get an extra year of service on your current phone, but that won't work to unlock your current phone. Even if the service is moved away, my guess is the iPhone 12 will be eligible to unlock on day 366 because activating with the year of "paid and active" service should meet the requirement. But nobody can definitively say since the new policy won't be tested until next January.

Under normal conditions, I'd agree about the battery.

This is a six-year-old device. Today.

Sitting on a shelf, not being used? That's not good for the battery, at all. I'd have my doubts as to the longevity of the product. And who knows what else has degraded due to "Planned Obsolescence"? Maybe a random chip or adhesive or whatnot. These things are specifically engineered to fall apart after so long.

Old stock, I assume. I actually bought 2 iPhone 12 Minis from Straight Talk in Oct. They were brand new. I did need to send the receipt to Apple to get the standard Apple warranty.
I did this same in hopes they'd be on a jailbreakable version of iOS. And they were.
