Go with refurbished and choose "excellent". It's much cheaper around $683ish and includes the additional 1 year warranty for peace of mind (honestly get akko). These are for sure to be unlocked and don't have to deal with the frustration if it ends up being locked.
The problem: the live Amazon listing appears to have changed. It currently shows $774.99 from Chubbiestech, not Amazon.com, while the Slickdeals post originally listed Amazon as the seller. At $775 from that third-party seller, I would pass.
The fine print matters:
* "Renewed Excellent" only promises more than 80% original battery capacity.
* The standard Amazon Renewed guarantee is only 90 days.
* The Amazon listing has a mediocre 3.9/5 rating from 985 ratings.
Current comparisons make the price merely fair: eBay has shown a 512GB unlocked refurb around $711.63 with a one-year warranty, while Best Buy has refurbished 512GB models around $765–$823.
My buying rule:
* Buy: $762 or less, sold by Amazon, US model SM-S938U/U1, truly unlocked.
* Better target: $700–$725 with a one-year warranty.
* Pass: $775 from Chubbiestech or an unidentified international model.
Samsung identifies SM-S938U as the US model and SM-S938B as the European/global version.
The advertised "46% off" is mostly MSRP theater. Nice fireworks, questionable substance.
