Look up mini splits on offer ^ you will see plenty of people that sell and install these off brand units

What's needed to install these:

Flairing tool
HVAC style torque wrench
Copper bending tools if needed
Nitrogen tank
Regular manifold
5/16 valve core tool
1/4 valve core tool
Vacuum hose
Vacuum pump
Micron gauge

There will also be some more supplies needed and and AC disconnect at the end of a home run to the panel.

Does this model have any kind of power limiter that caps the amount of power the unit can draw? I installed one EG4 mini split in my primary bedroom and connected it to an Ecoflow Delta 2 Max using off-grid solar panels to charge. The model from EG4 has an AC limiter, which has allowed me to limit the power draw (usually 25%) and have the battery last all night. Planning on installing another mini split in my detached garage, also with an Ecoflow/solar, but would prefer to not spend another $1,500+ on an EG4.
My other costway 18k BTU has a power limit function in the app. I would assume this one would as well

No one in their right mind would install this correctly for $300. Will it run? Probably, but not for as long as it should or without problems. Also, I think/hope you mean "lineset vacuumed" instead of "charged", the charging happens as soon as you open the valve on the condenser.

The vac pump your local auto parts stores lend out are single stage and are well used and pretty much worn out. These inverter systems need a DEEP 500 micron or less vacuum for proper functionality and longevity and you cannot get that even with a brand new single stage pump with fresh quality vac oil. You can't measure for a deep vacuum and ensure no leaks without a digital micron gauge. Auto store doesn't lend them out. The ol' "XX minutes at on an analog gauge showing -30in/hg" doesn't tell you anything - especially if you haven't triple evac'd the lines with nitrogen.

No, these are not pre-charged lines, they are patented so you're only going to find them with MRCOOL.

You absolutely do need HVAC tools.
These are exaggerated claims from HVAC companies/techs trying to keep their exorbitant labor prices.

I've installed 5 units, the oldest is going on 4 years and they're all still fine. Just a cheapo vacuum, manifold set and torque wrench from Amazon.

Agreed, as someone who's installed 4 of these now with no prior experience. This isn't really as hard as what some of these posts make it out to be. Do your research, get the right tools, and measure twice and it's not too bad at all. Even easier if you have a buddy.

I'm not an HVAC company, nor am I tech. In fact, I highly encourage people to learn how to install their own systems - and do it the right way. Which was the entire point of that post.

I was going to say exactly that. I installed one myself some 5 years ago, had issue with my vacuum pump leaking so I could get to the whatever was the recommended vacuum. After an hour of struggle, I took a chance with my shady work, released the gas and called it a day. I thought the ac may only run for a year or two and we are 5 years in with no issue and very strong cooling power. It isn't that hard or finicky, at least in my experience.

115v may be easier but it depends what circuit/breaker line you piggyback from. If there's not much plugged into it then the 115 will be much simpler to deal with. Otherwise you're looking about running a new line from the main panel. Unless you've done this before, you're either: ripping drywall, laying out the line, and hiring an electrician for the first review and hookup (inspection following by the city) OR hiring an electrician to do the whole thing. So in a very select few cases, 115v is a great solution. I'd bet that number decreases for ppl shopping for discounted units. FWIW: 4.6A for the 115v and 8.5A for the 220V.
I'm with you on the 115v piggy back. It would make it a whole lot simpler and less expensive to running dedicated lines to four bedrooms in my case. Are you fairly certain a dedicated line is not required for this or a 10000 BTU unit. I can live with no or very light uses of the other outlets. Thanks!

Im very interested in doing something like this. How long have you had this setup? And downside?

Bought the EG4 in May 2024, so it's been running a little over two years. I use it basically every single day/night and haven't run into any issues to this point. I'm currently looking to do the same with my detached garage.

A few things that have been helpful for me: a mini split with some sort of AC limiter to limit the power draw and a power bank that has the option to prioritize solar over AC charging.

My Ecoflow is set to 70% charge via AC. During the day it'll never drop below this number. Depending on how much solar I'm getting and/or how much I'm using the mini split the battery will be anywhere between 70-100% at 5pm when our power rates increase substantially. The smart plug will cut power to the Ecoflow and run entirely off that 70%+ battery until 9pm when rates drop back down and the smart plug turns back on.
