This mini PC is a strong value as a compact general purpose box, especially if the 32GB DDR5 and 1TB SSD are the main draw. The Ryzen 5 7640HS is a Zen 4 chip roughly in the Core Ultra 5 125H range, and the system should handle browsing, multitasking, Immich, Proxmox, or a Steam box setup well. It is also described as more power efficient than older Zen 2 and Zen Plus minis. The integrated graphics are fine for lighter gaming and streaming, but they are not a substitute for a discrete GPU and newer AAA games will push it.
Home lab builders running Proxmox or OPNsense, because the dual 2.5GbE networking and 32GB RAM handled router and virtualization workloads.
It is strong enough for a Steam box or light gaming, with performance roughly around a Steam Deck or a bit higher. It can handle streamed games and many local titles well, but the integrated GPU is not a replacement for a discrete graphics card for demanding 1080p gaming.
It can work well for Immich, Proxmox, Windows 11, or as an OPNSense/pfSense-style box. The dual 2.5GbE ports are reportedly Realtek RTL8125, which have been fine in OPNSense setups and may be preferable to Intel I225V/i226-V for some users.
The Ryzen 5 7640HS is Zen 4 and is roughly comparable to Intel Core Ultra 5 125H, with slightly better multi-threaded performance and slightly lower single-threaded performance. It is one generation behind current Zen 5 chips, but still a solid general-purpose CPU.
The 32GB DDR5 RAM and 1TB SSD are the main value drivers here, and the rest of the system is effectively a bonus at this price. It is considered a strong sub-$500 spec for a generalist PC, especially compared with older DDR4 Zen 2/Zen+ mini PCs.
If you need the 32GB of RAM and SSD, the CPU/chassis/wifi/OS/PSU is essentially free. CPU is a weird match for the other specs, TBH.
I'm genuinely out of the loop, having tired of the naming systems years ago: what is this CPU not up for, and what specs are you referencing for that assessment?

Performance would be closer to a steamdeck or slightly higher at times.

It's mostly that this form factor has Ryzen 7 CPUs with 8-core 16-thread configurations and the much better 780M iGPU. And if you go slightly larger to the mobile-on-desktop form factor, you can have Ryzen 9 16-core 32-thread processors, which is a more logical pairing when you're spending $350 of value on RAM.

Thanks! When I say I'm out of date: Factorio and Fortnite both run on the i5-4460 in my desktop I built in college, but that's all I know...
I don't game and I don't need the form factor. I just want a desktop pc that won't be obsolete for 5 to 7 years. I only surf the internet with multiple tabs open. Will this do or are there better options? I definitely like the 32gb memory of this one.

This will do fine...at least for 5 years, if you are just surfing the Internet. If you are using Chrome then multiple Tabs can consume a lot of Ram and since this has 32GB, you are covered.

About how old is the CPU. What's the equivalent Intel CPU?

Rather than how old, the actual question should be how many generation old. It is based on Zen 4 architecture, just one generation older than the current AMD Zen 5 lineup. It is more or less quivalent to Intel 1st gen Core Ultra series Core Ultra 5 125H with slightly better multi-threaded performance and slightly lower single threaded performance.
Zen 4, RDNA 3 CPU / GPU with 32GB DDR5 RAM and a 1TB SSD. Actually not bad for $500. It soundly beats those Zen 2 / Zen+ minis floating around with DDR4 RAM, and will be much more power efficient. This is a nice little generalist PC. It'll outperform something like the Steam Deck, but 780m APUs (and certainly 890m) have more headroom for demanding games. Just don't expect an iGPU to be some kind of powerhouse for gaming, and you'll be reasonably happy.
For non-gaming tasks, an RDNA 4 six-core is absolutely fine and should be enough for 95% of users. It's really hard to find these specs inside $500 anymore.

Yes. For internet browsing, 32GB is enough for years of use, and it helps with Chrome because multiple tabs can consume a lot of memory.

I have the Ryzen 7 6800H 24GB one.
It came with Crucial RAM and a Kingston 1TB SSD. It was $293 a year and 1/2 ago.
I ran OPnSense on it for a while (with the built in dual 2.5Gbps network), then changed it to ProxMox, then Windows 11
