My drift stick Stellar Shift says $24 and their cheapest new controller is $65. Walmart has black or white ones for $50 at the moment. So you're really spending more time driving around than the $5 you may be saving.
The thing that made GameStop trade-in promos more attractive to me was finding out I could get all my GS credit converted to Xbox credit. So I get the (relatively) elevated trade-in values, have them print out an Xbox GC code, then apply it to my Xbox account when I get home to buy digital games when they go on sale.
As others have said: using GS credit to buy stuff at GS kind of kills the benefit.

I traded in my controllers and immediately bought an Xbox gift card. Controllers can be had for cheaper on microsoft.com during a sale.
1. Major retailers like Walmart and Target do not have employees verify serial numbers on regular Xbox or PlayStation controllers. (In fact they can't because only a generic UPC shows up on the receipt)
2. When defective items are returned the retailer applies for credit on future orders and either return to vendor or liquidate. (Meaning the manufacturer eats the cost, not the store).

But hey, I know a dozen people who claim they were a millionaires for like 5 minutes (and they still talk about it.....) because of that short sell / Reddit nonsense. They all lost their butts on the transactions but if you listen to them they are basically Elon Musk
