I do appreciate a fresh ground cup of jo, but when you accept a 2nd cup from your friend and then watch 3 minutes of grinding you start to feel bad.
I'll be honest though, lately I've been creatively lazy and attach my power drill to the top and let it do the cranking. I got this idea from a high end coffee shop that I saw do the same.

1. It's cheap, and it affords you exacting control over how fine you want your grind.
2. It's quiet. When I'm the first person up in the morning and I want a fresh ground double espresso, plugging in the electric grinder is a good way to piss off the rest of the house.
3. It doesn't take long to grind one cup worth. I turn on my espresso maker, pour the beans, grind it, and by the time I'm done grinding the machine is ready and the portafilter with yesterday's grinds is loose enough to flick it into the garbage (rather than banging it - another early morning crowd pleaser).
Does this replace your electric grinder? No. Does it still have a place in some kitchens? Absolutely.
