Can get $195 for my 12 Pro that my teen's been using. Thinking of trading for a 17e as the battery is not so good anymore and the teen doesn't need so many camera lenses. I wonder if the prices will come down.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that if you trade in your phone and purchase a new phone there's also a tax advantage.

No. You pay the full price right away plus tax, then get the discount amount refunded after trade in (even if it is a single visit to the apple store), in my case $630 for a 16 Pro.

The last time I did this even though I was going to trade in for an upgrade anyways was because I didn't want to ship my phone and risk it being lost/stolen or receiving less credit than advertised due to possible "damage". The Genius Bar at the store will issue you a guaranteed gift card and you can just use that to apply to your pre order when available. Waste a trip to the store but sometimes worth it for peace of mind due to the possible trade in fiascos involved.

Correct, tell them you'd like to do a post purchase trade in and that you have the previous receipt.
They'll process the refund as a new transaction. Give them your debit card and you'll get "cash" back even if you paid with a different method.

Whether you get taxes back or not depends on your state, and how it's coded in their system.
From my experience, In TX and OK, you'll get the device trade value plus applicable tax refunded.
I know from a friend, In MD, you don't get tax refunded with trade in.
