Such poor reviews. It looks cool and all, but is it worth taking the chance?
It gets poor reviews because it brews at 6-bar, which is somewhat between espresso and coffee pressure. It also has no control over grind size or amount. Having said that, I own one and think it makes a GREAT coffee/espresso at 1/3 the cost of machines as close to this automatic.
Quality of Coffee (worst to best) from machines I've owned:
Keurig
Nesspresso
Philips Barisina
De Longhi Magnifica Evo ($750 machine)
Breville Express (takes significantly more user input to make a shot)
Point being, it's better than other very quick and automatic options for a 1-minute morning coffee on your way out the door (assuming you don't have time or money to fuss with a less automatic machine like the Breville Express). Personally, I've learned saving that 5-minutes of prep is worth having 90% of the potential flavor.
TIP #2: With this Phillips do the following...
(1) insert the empty portafilter basket and swipe it to the right.
(2) Press the left button as if you're going to make a coffee/espresso.
(3) 3-4 seconds in, press the left button again to "cancel" making a coffee/expresso
What this does is pre-loads a few grams of grinds in the filter since you cancelled midway. Now, just do the normal, super easy, coffee making process from the start. The difference is you'll have a few extra grams of grinds in those shots.
Reviews are bad because there is little control over the shot. But it does brew a good shot on it's own settings.
