Genuine question: Do people really still use paid anti-virus software like this? Windows Defender has been rock solid for me for a decade.

Nope. The only people that do are ignorant ones who still think you need paid AVs in 2026.

Windows defender is more than enough unless you need this for your grand parents. Even for them I recommend malwarebytes and not this bloatware.

I use windows defender. But i still need a good VPN. Not sure if I should renew nord vpn or get this

Depending on what you're using it for, I highly recommend ProtonVPN. But I also seed a lot of...Linux ISOs, so I require the port forwarding functionality.

Not to misdirect but which is better Windows Defender or malwarebytes?

Biggest concerns viruses and people accessing my computer, and web activity.

I have researched all I can. Defender generally comes out on top, but I have had a good experience with Malwarebytes.

I would argue that malwarebytes (premium comparable service) is just as problematic as Norton has become. I've tried them all on 6+ devices this year alone for other people and they seem to primarily eat RAM, send you ads constantly, and fight the user to remove all traces of the program after proper uninstallation (using their own software). I'd caution everyone to weigh the pros and cons and possibly opt for a reputable VPN over this mostly useless "malware detection." Personal experience of course.

Proton my brother, or another comparable VPN, even Brave is decent. And be sure to really make sure you do a full uninstall using Nord software when you get it off your computer. It will try and hide useless logs etc. and even residual installers if you can believe it. It's gone downhill imo.

I think the first question would be to honestly consider how haphazardly you will be using the device. If you plan to install kernel level sketchy software or leave your device in public spaces unattended, you might be one of the few people to maybe benefit. That being said, the program itself can become moot if you don't know where to look or a rogue program can override where to scan for files. In a vulnerability test I did I basically had to try and break the os before Norton, malwarebytes, Defender or Nord could detect the issue. That money is better spent taking it to a local shop for a quick diagnostic if you're that concerned. That's my experience running it on windows at least, the malicious program was able to instruct the antivirus to skip quarantine for entire partitions that it was manipulating.

Norton used to be the go-to, but now it has sooo much bloatware and unnecessary things, that it actually depletes the performance of your PC. Unless you are doing any "specialty" things on your computer, Windows Defender (kept up-to-date) should be just fine. Tempting price but its a Pass for me.

BECAREFUL this NORTON company:

I just log-in my American Express credit card to check my account. I was shocking that NORTON AUTO RENEWAL my account and charged me $135.30. I bought Norton Antivirus and activated Sept 16, 2025 for 1 year. So my account should be end in SEPT 16, 2026. And I NEVER TURN ON MY AUTO RENEWAL FEATURE. It was TURN-OFF. But NORTON still auto renewal and charged me on AUG 14. I don't even know, and they never email me about this renewal. I'm never authority them, but they still do anyway. This is scamming. I just disputed with AMEX about it.

I knew my account to be end. So I just bought a new activation for 1 year on NewEgg. Now, I don't know that I'm going to use it or not. If you bought this Norton Antivirus, PLEASE BECAREFUL. I show you the screenshot of the Norton Renewal my account without my consent below.
