This trade in deal mainly turns a Switch OLED or original Switch into a cheaper Switch 2, with the strongest appeal being the high trade value and easy in store pickup when the promo is recognized. The Switch 2 adds 1080p, HDR, VRR, faster loads, and smoother gameplay, while still playing Switch 1 games. The main knocks are the LCD screen, which can look washed out or smeary next to OLED, and the shorter battery life. Trade in rules and store handling vary, so accessories, model selection, and promo application can affect the final total.

Common Questions (5)

  • The dock is often not required, and several trade-ins went through with only the console, Joy-Cons, and power adapter/cable. Some stores asked for more accessories or scrutinized missing cables, so bringing the dock and original items can help avoid a reduced value.

  • Yes for most games: digital games stay tied to your Nintendo account, and system transfer can be done before you own the Switch 2. Animal Crossing and some Pokémon saves need special transfer steps or Nintendo support, and cloud backup requires Nintendo Switch Online.

  • The Switch 2 screen is sharper, larger, and has HDR plus VRR, but the OLED still wins for black levels, contrast, and color pop. For dark games and handheld use, the OLED is often described as visibly better; for bright games and smoother gameplay, the Switch 2 can look very good.

  • The promo is tied to ordering the Switch 2, so the usual flow is to place the Switch 2 order online and select trade-in during checkout. Store pickup can apply the credit at pickup, while shipping the trade-in usually means mailing the old console and waiting up to about 2 weeks for the refund.

  • The trade-in can total $205 for a Switch OLED: $130 as the base trade-in value plus a $75 Switch 2 promo. In some transactions the $75 is applied as an upfront discount on the Switch 2 price, while the $130 is refunded to the payment method or loaded to a gift card.

Any idea if you're able to do shipping, but trade in the Switch in person? Ideally want to migrate data over, and then trade it in, but don't want to risk it by shipping.
Yes, I have chatted with a Best Buy Rep- I will have the switch2 ship to my location, then drop off the trade-in in-store. This seems like the best solution for me

I was wondering something along these lines because when I say I have a switch with blue/red joycons it presents the mario kart bundle or the regular one... and the mario kart one it only offers $75 for..

As it turns out! I have two switches, both are v2 units with xkw serial numbers and hac001(-01) on the back. And the one I want to trade in was a 'mario kart bundle' unit lol.

How do I make sure they give me $150 for it and not $75? Big Grin
They didn't check or scan mine. My Feb 2019 Switch 1 had hac001(-01) on the back. And I got the full $150 off.

They scanned mine that is HAC001, and there are no issues. Go give it a try. Worst case is they won't accept it.

Switch online sub, cloud saves for most games.

They took my 8 year old switch even though both joycons had drift, they didn't even power it on.

Not sure how good a deal this was but after the thousands of hours I got on mine getting 60% trade in value for what I paid seemed worthwhile
what sucks is I almost never used mine. I bet I don't even have 30 hours of use on it. So I could get much more for it if anyone were to trust me on hours and buy directly from me. But avoiding that hassle and speeding up the whole process is worth it to me at this po9ntl I doubt anyone would have given me more than $200 after fees and this is like getting $150....

Also, I would never play in handheld mode, so the handheld screen not being oled shouldn't be a big deal to me. I would normally not get the switch 2, given how little I played the original, but that is just because I stopped gaming and never got around to it, but plan to go back to gaming more. I have a ps5 also and have sued it even less than the switch. lol.

Now if only best buy had a sale on the switch 2. sigh.

Also, I just notice I have every single accessory, the box, even the plastic bags everything was wrapped in... Luckily I searched online to see if the usb charging cable came with the console or the pro controller or I;d be accidentally giving them that too. But anyway whoever gets this will pretty much be getting an ALMOST unused system, complete with everything, and it being the day 1 version.

I disagree. I grew up on OOT. Its the goat. I'd spend probably an excessive amount on a s2 branded OOT console, controller, whatever. And yes I've played through the ship of harkinian for it many many many times.
oot was my favorite game of all time and I hated majora's mask. And oddly now majoras mask is my favorite and oot second. lol. Theya re remaking both of them, but I am sure I will be very disappointed. I couldn't care less about visual changes. I want a new dungeon or two in each and nintendo is too lazy to ever add something like that. Even if they'd just rework dungeons like a new master master quest would be nice, but they will instead do nothing different in them. I can[t even get into botw and havent started totk because of them losing all of the magic by not having traditional dungeons, dungeon items, etc..

Btw I have a nintendo online subscription card I never used. So what would be the process for me to get my existing save data from the console into their cloud if I activate that subscription before trading it in? Only game I even started on it was botw and I only did less than 20 shrines before quitting.

You can back up your saves and files on your switch to prepare for the new one as long as you have Nintendo online. If you don't you can do the free trial until you're done transferring. I just did this deal today and everything transferred.
I ended up doing a Nintendo online trial. They barely checked the switch. Just that it turned on. This works out well because my switch 1 barely held a charge

Traded my Switch1 (Mario Cart package). When placing the order online, the website said that model # would only get $75 back so chose the standard blue/red model to get the full $150. Didn't have a problem trading it in even though the model# is different.

The CSR who helped me didn't even turn it on and but (very) closely inspected the condition on the console and the glass. I didn't have the two joycon wrist straps and was worried he would give me trouble about that but didn't mention it.

People get caught up in all sort of nonsense. You are buying this to play nintendo games if you want 120fps there are a lot of options out there but they are not from nintendo and do not play switch2 games. We have been playing GBA GC PS4 Xbox games at 30FPS on our TV screens and we enjoyed it. More FPS or darker blacks is not gonna make up for bad games.

Right now this is the best value you can get for your switch/OLED
I completely see your point and it's valid for sure. I understand some people truly can't tell a difference but i also want people to be informed for there purchases.

I would absolutely buy a S2 right now if it was OLED all over again because of how good the S1 oled was ! It was a night and day difference for sure !

Just did the trade in with my regular Switch. I ordered the Switch 2 online to get the free steelbook yesterday, picked up today. The worker was sweet, but I don't really think she knew what was really needed. I brought everything just in case, but she only asked for the controller (the joycons on the switch) and the charging cable. Ended up keeping the dock, controller grip and joycon grips, and hdmi cable. She didn't even turn on the console to check if it worked (it ran great).

She said the $150 could be seen on her screen and that it would be credited back to my card in a couple of days. Super easy, but fair warning that I think what you turn in depends heavily on the worker checking the items.
