Taxes charged are both Fed/state (it's not up to Walmart) and depend on the state you live in, some states charge way more than others. Phone service plans are usually taxed (911 etc). There are charts available online to show the percentages.

It's weird. Utah my state only charges tax on the price you pay minus discounts unless it's like a bill credit situation then you get charged tax on the entire amount. For instance I ordered a Google pixel 11 pro $1,099 from Google store. I got charged taxes after the $250 coupon I got emailed for. So I only paid taxes on the $849 and also I got $550 trade credit for my 9 Pro XL so I actually only got charged taxes on $299. So both discount code and trade in are tax free in Utah. But Walmart charges tax on the entire normal price of the phone first then gives the discount after. Which would be $26+ I guess some 911 taxes to add up to $30 like I got charged on this.

I do deals like this every few years to get a new phone. My current prepaid deal phone is a unlocked 13...looks like it could bring around $200. That would make this around $350 for phone and 13 months service. service i value around $250 so around $100 for me to get a new phone.

service value is around $180 or less considering that it costs straight talk $0 to have you as a new customer. and you can reproduce a plan like this for around &180/year using other prepaid carriers.

so they are netting around $554 for a 16e - not bad considering current resale value is under $400. they get to clear inventory at close to cost.

it sounds good to the average deal hunting consumer, but in reality its a wash and the house always wins. much prefer getting unlocked and cycling prepaid carriers to budget optimize rather than tying yourself to an overpriced plan.

Call several of them, preferably supercenters. Connect to electronics department. Ask them if they have premium wireless activation in store.
From what I've seen in TX, they seem to focus more on smaller cities with less competition. Bigger cities still have them, but fewer locations.

Is this true? -- Straight Talk's updated policy specifically requires 365 days of paid and active service. It is not just a calendar waiting period.

That's been the policy since January 2026, you can read it on their website (it's the same as TF& TW).
