Just need google sheet and a stable browser - although i realize this is 6 years old machine....A poster above said not to upgrade to OS26? (Mac OS 11.0, Big Sur - Keep running this).... or were they just warning due to big update/larger OS size?
I have an m1 now for myself and it's still plenty chugging along.
Her one school does run Microsoft 365, but that's cloud so don't believe it'd be an issue on this?
The thing will be hitting its cap with even minor number of tabs open. You're better off with a refurb newer model at that point. Plus it's only got a few more updates left. Like 1 year?
256GB is sorta tight but not as tight as the junk Woot sold me with only 128GB (the edu model as the previous poster mentioned). 16GB is still considered a good amount of RAM on these M1's. It runs Tahoe fine. Just get DaisyDisk because you'll be hunting around for space most of the time.

It's also a step backward in authentication strength, not forward. NIST's guidance on this treats real multi-factor security as combining something you know with something you are or have. Touch ID plus a password is two factors, a password manager by itself is one. And Touch ID isn't just gating the password manager. It's also handling FileVault, sudo, Apple Pay, and increasingly passkeys, which are becoming the standard replacement for passwords industry-wide. Passkeys rely on a hardware-bound key in the Secure Enclave that's only released by a local biometric or PIN gesture, so a Mac without Touch ID is worse positioned for where authentication is actually heading, not better.
There's a usability angle too, and it matters more than people give it credit for. Fast biometric unlock is exactly what makes it tolerable to use a genuinely long, hard-to-guess master password instead of something short and memorable. Take away the convenience and you create real pressure toward weaker passwords just so unlocking your laptop doesn't become a chore. So the claim isn't wrong that a password manager helps, it's wrong to think it makes biometrics optional. It solves one problem while quietly making a different one worse.
Dismissing Touch ID because you use a password manager is like removing the deadbolt because you installed a nicer doorknob.
Password managers were great in 2012 and they are still a fine tool, but we've moved past one long passphrase to protect everything.
