I've seen jigs used with designs that be broken up / optimized for printing on a curve. Some tools and engravers even incorporate some accomodations for curved surface engraving.

However, the best/sharpest output without a rotary encoder is indeed going to be a narrow slice of any given curve. And with a device like this that has zero integrated vertical adjustment, I'd suggest that a jig is just the start of your problems and you should be looking elsewhere.

More importantly, the most fun is certainly had by me with a rotary encoder (on the local library's dime). I love printing a full periodic table around a Thermos Funtainer along with name and phone number as a complete wrap-around!
