Vine rewards participants by the volume of their reviews; the quality (or accuracy) of the reviews isn't as important. Keeping up with the required reviews to stay in the program means a lot of reviewers get lazy and generate garbage reviews.
Vine participants start out at Silver status - getting 3 items per day with a value of $100 or less per item. They have to review 60% of the items to remain in the program calculated over a certain period of time (the evaluation period).
Silver level participants who receive 80 items and 90% in the evaluation period qualify for Gold level which allows 8 items per day without any limit on value. In order to stay in Gold reviewers have to receive 100 items and review 90% of them during the evaluation period.
It becomes a lot to select items, use them and write real reviews within the 30 days normally allowed, especially at the Gold level. From my experience it became like a side job that was difficult to keep up with.
Having written legitimate reviews for all the Vine products I received it was clear that many of the reviewers hadn't used or made any real attempt to write a real review. I saw a lot of vague single sentence Vine reviews for items as well and it was clear that Amazon does very little vetting of Vine reviews. I'd go so far to suggest that as long as the Vine reviewers are writing good reviews they get a pass; regardless of the content of the review.
So I'd say there is an implicit advantage to participants to fudge Vine reviews simply to remain in the program and get free items. Especially since there are Vine reviewers who resell their free items at first opportunity.
And Vine reviews tend to trend positive.
I was a Vine reviewer for a year and also gave honest reviews. But during the process I also noticed that there were Vine reviewers giving good reviews to poor products that they clearly didn't use. So for whatever reason Vine reviewers do often give good reviews for bad products.
So caveat emptor.
