A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

The Social Network - Overall, I thought it was a great movie, but I didn't feel good after watching it. It was kind of disheartening. Also, there were a lot of parts where I felt that the music was WAY too loud and that it drowned out the dialog.

Which ending did you see? I heard there was an alternate ending on the DVD which changed the whole context of the movie. But yeah, over all I agree with your review.

Iagree There was music where there should not have been. Honestly I don't have a facebook account and I'm glad.

"Harry Brown" when Michael Caine shoots back, just run punk and keep running. When you press play, hit the subtitles button also because you will need it. This movie is about drug dealing punks who just picked on the wrong old man. It's fun to see a young punk say a Jamaican curse word "P*ssyhole" Rofl2 It was cool. 3.5/5

"A Family That Preys" yes it's another Tyler Perry movie and yes we have more black on black hate but this time, you see what happens when you cheat and lie. Oh wait, we've seen it. I did like the fighting sisters, Sanaa Lathan and Taraji P. Henson they were excellent. You also get a cast of Alfre Woodard, Robin Givens and Kathy Bates which just bring the trouble. 3.5/5

"Due Date"
I wish a man would spit on my dog. How rude was that? Smack This movie seemed like Dennis the Menace meets Mr. Bean meets crazy. Way too much Giafinikis and those tight acid wash pants. Where do you find those pants. Also Robert Downey Jr. was just angry all the time, I mean all the time nod. It's ok if you really want to watch it but its not my first choice. 2.5/5

"Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaur" well please make this the last one. The squirrel and his never ending quest for his nut, Ray Ramono's voice vomit Please no more. I did like John Leguizamo as the sloth trying to start a family, that was cute. The crazy badger I think was hilarious. He had his own set of special herbs that the was on and he will make you laugh. But I'm done, no more. Go raise your baby Queen. 2/5

Iagree He was such a London Fog wearing badass in that one. I vaguely remember athat bar scene at the end as being especially good. It somehow reminded me of an older version of the guy he played in "Get Carter" (but on the other side of the law.)

If you like Caine definitely check out "Last Orders" - it's not a crime flick, but I liked it a lot.

Oh yeah that bar scene was awesome and surprising. I liked it. As for "Last Orders", I got the summary:

Follows the lives of four men, covering nearly a half-century of these South London buddies lives, from thier adopted pub to Margate Pier. Through a series of flashbacks, they take you on a journey of a lifetime. Along with them are the ashes of Jack, their larger-than-life friend, whose deathbed request sends them on their way.

Umm, not even with the strongest Malbec, shake head, not even going to try and watch the "Bucket List". Give me another one so I can add it to my library queue.

I didn't find it to be all that emotionally charged much later in the film. FWIW In that case don't watch another great movie, "Departures" Big Grin

OK - happy(ish) stuff...how about "Once" - or if you don't mind subtitles "Kikujiro".wave (Yeah, I recommend that one a lot.)

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - Meh. Fell asleep a few times. Had its moments but overall, definitely not as good as the previous ones. And the whole mermaid/priest romance thing just felt so out of place; they (the filmmakers) were so obviously trying to replace the void left by Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. 5/10

Anyone planning on watching "The Tree of Life"? Comes out this weekend on limited release. Wide release is July 8th. Trailer if you haven't heard of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLPe0fHuZsc

Black Lightning - Excellent Russian film about a college guy whose father unwittingly gives him a car that can fly. Tragedy strikes and he decides to use the car to fight crime and help a group of scientists. It's like the Russian version of Batman without the costume. Seriously. The film was as good as its trailer:

High Five I saw that movie a while back, great movie Thumbup

The Tunnel - Australian Horror/Drama/Thriller. Was pretty good in my opinion. Kept me entertained and kept my attention throughout. 7/10

Hidden 3D - Waste of time. It looked like just another post-apocalyptic movie with a resident evil feel at first, but took a completely different turn and was so dull and boring for a horror movie. very very predictable too. 0/10

Passion Play - Starring Mickey Rourke, Bill Murray, and Megan Fox. It was ok. Not a MUST SEE movie, but I guess I didn't mind watching it. The end had a nice twist, but over all the acting was pretty dull and it sort of seemed to drag on. Gets a 3/10 only because of the eye candy that is Megan Fox and for seeing Bill Murray in a movie after so long.

I'm a mermaid and yeah, we don't sleep with priests. We may date the occasional lobster but no priests.

Five Corners - Jodie Foster, Tim Robbins, John Turturro. Huh A film without a plot.

Daredevil - Ben Affleck doesn't have the body to play a superhero. Justin Hartley as Green Arrow in Smallville? That's more like it.

Put Stan Lee's Superhumans in my queue.

All Good Things - Meh. It's based on a true story, and the true story is actually pretty thrilling. Murder, a young wife disappears, a very well-to-do New York family, etc. But they did a poor job translating it to a movie. It could have been so much better.

"Andrei Rublev" - A Soviet era black and white film about a medieval artist. It was really long and started slow (and a bit artsy,) but in the end I kind of liked it.

"Intimate Strangers" - A French film about a woman and her shrink. The premise was good but I thought it fell kind of flat. They're doing a remake of it with Hilary Swank.

"Ripley's Game" - Malkovich playing a villain (that's groundbreaking) I thought it was really good.

"High Noon" - Old time western. I don't know why I keep watching them - I want to like westerns, but most of them are really boring to me. Bummer.

"Four Rooms" - I've stayed away from this for a long time, since it's the only Tarantino film (him + 3 other directors) that I've not seen and it's reportedly really bad. I can confirm those reports are right on the money.

"Un Chien Andalou" - 15 minute silent film co-directed by Salvador Dali. Totally surreal - a few disturbing scenes. It out-weirds David Lynch.

"Transcendent Man" - A Ray Kurzweil (futurist) biopic of sorts. It covered some of his past and his predictions for the future. Crazy smart dude.

"Nosferatu" - 1922 - It was a lot better than I expected.

"Aguirre - Wrath of God" - A Werner Herzog film. It looks fantastic for a 40 year old film (flick about Pizarro's search for El Dorado) - the story didn't pull me in, but it decent enough.

"Aaltra" - The premise is great (two paralyzed neighbors go on a roadtrip) - it had a couple of funny/surreal scenes at first. The premise got a bit old (the movie was about 45 minutes too long) but overall I still liked it.

"Black Lightning" - As recommended here - I generally don't like superhero movies but I really liked this one. It seemed to have a lot of similarities to Spiderman/Batman, but was different enough that it stood on its own. Good find guys!

I forgot to mention this one a while back - "Miral" - by the guy that did "Diving Bell and the Buttefly" (which I loved) - It's based on the novelized autobiography of his current girlfriend. I saw it after hearing him talk on the radio about how profound the subject matter was (tale of a young Muslim woman in Palestine/Israel) - it fell completely flat.
