A "Hey I just watched a movie" thread

12,438 1,117 April 23, 2010 at 06:49 PM
One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) Big Grin

I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)

So what have you folks watched recently?

It's hard for me to watch movies about The Troubles in NI. DH had to live through all of that, the riots, the bombs, etc. He was knocked down by one of the bomb blasts that killed a policeman so he's very lucky to have come through all of that in one piece.

It is a pretty gut wrenching film, but it gives you what you want, Liam Neeson in his element AND a good movie.

Ever read any of Tim Pat Coogan's books (he covers Ireland from Collins/de Valera onward?) Great writer.

"A Dangerous Method" – Every bit as exciting as a movie about 20th Century psychoanalysts could be. 2/5

"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" - I am really surprised that this is getting any Oscar attention, even though it seems to be written for the Academy voters (as was "Hugo".) I thought the second half of the film was a bit more engaging than the first but overall it was a bore. I thought the September 11th references were a bit cheap. File this alongside "Hugo" and "Midnight in Paris" as three movies I'm rooting against re: the Oscars. 1.5/5

"Shame" – Good performances, really boring flick, in spite of the gratuitous nasty bits. 2/5

Jeez, I really sound like the two old curmudgeons from "The Muppet Show" but I think I'm starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel for the films that got Oscar love.

The review I read of this one made it seem like September 11th was fairly integral to the story. That said, I don't really have any interest in seeing it.

It absolutely was integral to the story, but they way they did it came across as kind of cheap and exploitative. Maybe if I saw the film in 20 years I'd feel differently, but it didn't sit all that well with me.

Just saw Colombiana [imdb.com]
I liked it, but I didn't expect much in the way of original plot or anything like that. Anything written by Luc Besson has to be viewed with certain expectations. Plus Zoe Saldana is farking unbelievable hot.

Didn't expect much and ended up being wonderfully surprised at how good this movie was. It just kind of sucked me in and took me on a nice ride full of laughter, tears, amazement, etc.

I'd give it 8/10.
Yup. Just saw this movie. Well made.

Took yesterday afternoon off with my teammates for some team building and took in Safe House. It was a little slow at times, but other than that pretty solid.

"A Better Life" – A very good movie centering on an illegal alien living in California. 4/5

"Albert Nobbs" – The story was OK and interesting enough. The gimmick behind the characters was what really kept my attention. 3/5

"Margin Call" – It really didn't bring anything new to the table, but it had enough tension to keep me interested. I thought it was pretty good. 3.5/5

"Warrior" – At first I was totally expecting there to be a Rocky IV style montage here. The lines they wrote for the ringside announcers were douche-chilling (and cheesily delivered) but aside from that I really enjoyed it. I liked the way they handled the very end of the film. 4.5/5

"The Way" – I really liked this film. It was definitely low hanging fruit in terms of sentimentality, but it was really well done. I've always been a sucker for films that are big on the father/son relationship thing (in a good way) and this one really resonated with me. Overall it was a very sweetly written film, and Martin Sheen did a fantastic job in it. They could have very easily made it a social commentary/religious film but it seems like they made an effort to avoid doing so. If Mike and the Mechanics' "The Living Years" hits you in a soft spot then you might want to check this flick out. 4.5/5

Super 8 - I really liked it! I think growing up in the 80's it felt like a film I might have grown up watching. Great story and cool explosions!
