One of the other forums I go to has one of these threads and I've been turned on to some good movies that other regulars just watched. I was kind of surprised not to see a similar thread here (at least not that I could find.) 
I just rewatched "Kinamand" - a cute drama about a Danish plumber who gets involved in an arranged marriage with a Chinese illegal. Good stuff (Netflix instant.)
So what have you folks watched recently?

Eh, it's ok. Not sure what the big deal about it is. Nothing even happens until the second half.
On the good side of the ledger, we had Blazing Saddles (1974) and Movie Crazy (1932). This was the first time I had seen both of these movies, and I really enjoyed them both. Blazing Saddles is so quotable (of course), and Movie Crazy was my first Harold Lloyd movie. I am eager to check out his silent films and see how those compare. Fun stuff!
And then there was Still Smokin' (1983)...which easily landed on my Top Ten Worst Films of All Time List. I love Cheech & Chong, but this "movie" was a train wreck from start to finish. I had to cleanse my palate with some Up In Smoke therapy after suffering through Still Smokin'. Oh the humanity!

from the very beginning, Tintin is literally the perfect person: always kind to everyone, patient to a fault, never shows any anger (or any other real emotion), etc. Shrek was a curmudgeon, Wall-E was lonely, Lightning McQeen was a narcissist, but Tintin is just perfect from the start. he only drops the veil of eternal optimism once in the entire movie, and even then, he doesn't seem angry, just sort of "aw shucks" about it. i actually found the character quite annoying.
almost all of the other characters are as one-dimensional: the bumbling twin constables, the evil villain with no redeeming qualities, the dog sidekick who can be used as a plot crutch, and the list goes on. the one shining exception is the boat captain Tintin needs to figure out the central plot secret: he actually matures and changes as the film progresses. he's a vehicle for cheap alcoholism gags when we meet him, but as his back story is explained and he learns more about himself, there's a real internal struggle and maturation process that takes place. he's the only character i cared about in the entire movie.
the rest of the film was slapstick/physical humor (not a pun or clever joke in sight) and a few fairly mediocre action sequences which featured some terribly unrealistic feats. i can normally suspend my disbelief, but when 95% of a movie (including some plot points) are based on realistic physics and consequences of fires/falls/gravity, but everything goes out the window during action sequences, it feels tacked on and lazy.
that said: the kids were enthralled, so i guess they hit their target audience.

Hugo - WTH? Seriously. Two hours to tell the story of a boy helping an old man appreciate his life's work? AND it was the slowest moving film ever; 20 minutes alone just establishing that the boy lives in a train station. Epic failure.
