I'm thinking a recent vintage Android phone would give similar functionality - not as nice as dedicated device, but coverage might be better. YMMV.

Some people say they were able to do it by activating their SIM in a whitelisted device, then moving it to the Mudi 7. Some people resorted to cloning the IMEI of a "donor" device into their Mudi 7. Some people say it worked fine at first, but then got throttled (presumably because they detected a non-whitelisted device). Some people say they have better luck with MVNOs. Some people say they put phone SIMs in this, and it worked fine at first, but after a few days it got banned.
I'm not saying it can't be done. I'm just saying there are extra complications. You generally can't just buy this and take it to a provider and expect them to let you connect it. My friend just got one and I've been trying to help her connect it to a reasonable plan, and it has been a struggle.

Either way, I've used it heavily for personal and work. I've kept it in a backpack all day long (going through 4-5GB in a day) and at the end of the 12 hour day it was still at like 40-50%, pumping out 300-400Mbps almost the entire time. I use a MINTMobile eSIM, though I also have a Computers4People SIM in there if I need it. Both use the T-Mo network. The big thing is I can also really easily tell it to connect to WiFi spots through the app or on the screen and all our devices are already connected...so then I can flip on the VPN back to the house and we're all on our home network without having to do a thing.
It's honestly what the Unifi UTR should have been, but they refused to put a battery in it, and the screen is useless. With this, you can do almost all of the stuff you'd need to do with it directly on the screen, including connecting to other Hotspots and turning on/off features. We've used it on planes to connect to the plane WiFi and all our devices are already connected.
I've used travel routers for years (I traveled for work heavily for around a decade), but this is the best one I've ever used by a very long margin.
T-Mobile has monthly plans, 25GB for $25 and 100GB for $50. I think their is real value there and I have a friend who RV's "3 month on/ 3 months home" and they use T-mobile and a got spot and report having excellent service nationwide.
