VFF purchased North Face, Jansport, Eastpak, Eagle Creek, 55% of the backpack martket. So when you're comparing like Jansport to a North Face, you're comparing against the same company. The goods keep getting cheaper and thinner and flimsier etc. I would read a little bit about denier counts.
I'm just learning about it. But I'd imagine reputable companies like Filson still make good thick backpacks. I still have a while till I buy a new one since I just bought my Surge a few weeks ago, so I don't need to research it much yet.
