Be aware that early batches have Dpad issues, so I'm not sure if this is still old stock. I've been wanting to get one for a while but have been wary of the hardware issues.
The GameSir Pocket Taco is a vertical Bluetooth mobile controller aimed at retro gaming on a phone, especially Game Boy and other emulator setups. It feels natural for Game Boy, works with Cannoli and other emulators, and the concept is appealing for the right use case. The main drawback is the D pad, with reports of false diagonals, mushy buttons, and awkward control in games like Tetris or Contra. The form factor also takes up screen space and can feel awkward or uncomfortable for longer sessions, so it suits short, specific play sessions best.
People trying a phone-mounted retro setup for short sessions, because it can be a workable way to play when the controls feel acceptable.
Early batches can have severe D-pad issues, including false diagonal inputs and mushy directional presses. Some units appear improved, but the D-pad may still feel less precise than expected for games like Tetris or Contra.
It can feel awkward because the controller sits over part of the screen and may be uncomfortable to hold for long periods. It works best for a specific use case, especially 4:3 retro games in an emulator that can place the game in the top half of the phone screen.
Walmart offers free 30-day returns to stores, which makes it a lower-risk buy if you want to try the controller. In at least one case, Walmart told the buyer to keep it and refunded them during the return process.
It feels most natural for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games, and it also works with other emulators. One setup mentioned using the Cannoli app from GitHub for GB/GBC/GBA ROMs.
I'm with you. Seems neat until you realize it only works well on 4:3 and that is assuming your emulator of choice can be even be forced to display on the content on the top half of your phone screen. *That being said the Taco is supposedly really great if you have the proper use case.
I wanted it for GBA games which in theory it's perfect for. This whole class of device is kind of awkward because by the time you're done setting it up you're halfway to your train stop or whatever. Idk. The perfect one of these is still elusive

I don't want a device that I have to assemble in the field to play a game for 5 minutes at a time. This seems less annoying than one of those clamp controllers....but barely. I just default to also having something on me like a RG Rotate or Magicx Mini 28. Either way you have your phone and something else on you. Might as well have a purpose built handheld if you are already carrying multiple gadgets.
*I just wish someone would come out with a smart phone with built in controls for retro gaming. Maybe a hybrid of the Miyoo Flip (half size screen is fine for me) and a Samsung Flip. Or a Retroid Pocket Flip 2-ish phone. Perhaps the screen or bottom could flip around or something. Can't believe no one has made a serious attempt at it. So much of the hardware is shared between the higher end retro handhelds and android phones already.
it's still functional. the d-pad just doesnt feel as good as it should. i'll probably buy the V2 model and gift this one for Christmas as a stocking stuffer

Currently it's the new transparent purple model. I don't know when this OG color scheme will get the better d-pad.
I see. I did receive the OG color from Walmart. I bought two to get free shipping. Both had no false diagonal inputs as others reported, and if anything, the diagonal is a little bit hard to register, but not the worse D-pad I have seen. Maybe they have fixed it?

It is useable for me as well, but something about it felt "off". When I started to hear there being a known issue with the d-pad it made sense to me.

I'm sure it was a mix up as the GameSir store has great reviews, but it really sucks I have to go to the store to get my money back, then reorder.
