I will send pics of house in the next few week after floors are refinished.
"Got a solution, on Windows Vista with 3GS phone.
I created a new user in the control panel, restarted, then logged in as the new user.
I then opened iTunes, which installs for the new user and then connected the phone. It then went through the OS software update no problems.
I stopped it at registering/setting up and switched back to my original user profile and it automatically restored from the back up.

Start menu
control panel
user accounts and family safety
Add or remove user accounts (right under the first heading "User Accounts")
Create a new account
Type in "test"
Click the radio button for "Administrator"
Hit "create account"
Close out of all windows.
Now go to the start menu and hit the little arrow next to the Shut Down button
Choose "Log Off"
It should take you to a page where you can choose to log in as yourself and the other user you just created.
Click on the button for "test"
now you're logged in as another user and can follow the above directions.

If you drink a few days in that time period, just try to hold it to 2-3 instead of 12 lol.
Think about reducing total intake over that period as opposed to quitting cold turkey
(which is really hard). Don't be too hard on yourself either.
