The Galaxy Z Fold8 stands out as a premium foldable that can get much cheaper with trade in credits and stacked rebates, with effective prices dropping to around $1450 or even about $1240 in one deal math example. Long term Fold ownership across multiple generations is described as smooth, with several reports of years of use, travel, and heavy daily opening without hinge or screen problems. The main cautions are the high upfront price, concerns about durability and repair costs, and the limited 256GB storage at this price. It looks best for shoppers comfortable with foldable upkeep and insurance.
Power users who want a large folding screen for daily carry, because long-term owners report years of use with no hinge or display failures.
The Fold line can hold up well with normal care, with multiple owners reporting years of use across Fold 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 without major hinge or screen failures. Reported weak points include inner screen protector wear, occasional hinge issues after drops, and the need for insurance or a good case if you want extra protection.
A case, insurance, and a screen protector are commonly recommended because the inner screen protector can peel and repairs can be expensive. One replacement ran about $80 without warranty, while a screen protector was described as a roughly $5 way to reduce scratches and usage damage.
The effective price can drop to about $1,450 with a very old trade-in, and one breakdown shows $1,239.99 when a $210 trade-in stacks with a $200 limited-time Amazon rebate. Check whether the rebate applies to your account before buying, since it can materially lower the total.
Tempting, they will take very old phones like an s20 and still give over $200 trade in. At ~$1450 after trading in a $20 phone, it's a good deal. My fold 4 still works flawlessly. Need an excuse to upgrade.
Agree. The price and durability just isn't there yet and anyone who buys any fold just as well add insurance to their cost because you'll use it eventually.

Do you have a fold? Did you use a fold and had an issue? My household went through about 7 different fold models. Oldest one that we have is fold 3 we got 5 yrs ago and still works (though recently speaker has been an issue, we should upgrade). My son and I went from fold 3 to 6, my wife went from fold 3 to 5 (fold 3's hinge wasn't working right after she dropped it badly, traded it in for fold 5 and this was after 2 years of heavy use) Pretty much only issue we had (other than 1 hinge not opening all the way- will open to like 175 degrees not full 180) was the inner screen protector coming off. My older son, he replaced it recently DIY. When my screen protector started to come off on my Fold 3, I just took it off and used it as is for over a year before I upgraded it to Fold 6. So far, I am happy with durability of the fold.

I've had the Fold 7 since launch and no issues. I've traveled around the world with it. I just have a regular Amazon case on it. Don't be a fear mongerer.

I've had three foldables, the Flip 5, Flip 7, and now the Fold 8. That's 4 years of exclusively using foldable. Not a single issue.
I've bought my folds from eBay, the Fold 4 without warranty and the Fold 6 with Allstate warranty. The Fold 4 needed its inner screen protector replaced for around $80 or so, and the Fold 6 needed its inner screen replaced under that Allstate warranty. Here's hoping they last.

We went through 2x Fold 4's. One's screen was damaged by my 6 yrs old daughter, who apparently did not open it properly. The other bricked during one of the upgrades. Compared with all the bar style phones we have used, none have failed us. Even after many drops, sitting on them, etc...

Several Fold users report long-term operation without major problems across multiple generations of foldables.
Trade-in can lower the effective price to around $1450 when older phones receive over $200 credit.
Some Fold owners report hinge and inner-screen protector issues are limited to specific events rather than constant failures.
Screen protectors and protective cases can help reduce scratches and usage damage during drops and travel.
Fold pricing and durability can feel mismatched, and insurance is recommended because issues may eventually appear.
Inner screen protector replacement can cost about $80 without warranty, which adds out-of-pocket risk.
Some Fold 4 units reportedly bricked during upgrades or suffered damage after improper handling.
256GB storage on an expensive Fold model can seem questionable, with component cost increases suggested as a possible driver.
