It gets hot. They include a thermal pad to stick on the hard drive that goes right against the case, so the case acts as a heat sync and disappates the heat through the whole thing.
But if you don't want to use the hard drive, you're better off buying something else.
This is not a "keep in your pocket" device. It's if you need an external drive go shoot video that you can use with a rig. If you need to transfer files to and from another phone, tablet, or computer and don't want to use the cloud. If you want an android docking station that you can also use with a laptop it's solid.
So far it works very well, but it's kind of less "is this product good or not" and more "is this right for me?"
