The last time I tried, no. They had locked the bootloader past a certain iteration of FireOS. I gave up on Amazon devices shortly after that. The forced ads on everything are crazy.

Its a hit or miss situation. If you get an older model then you probably can, but the amount of hoops you have to jump through just to get to like 80% of a vanilla experience is too much.

This is not a bad deal at all. Amazon has quietly bumped up the RAM to 4GB on this model. Do a trade-in and get another 20% off (plus the value of the trade-in). This tablet (even the latest FireOS) can be rooted using GhostLock, greatly increasing the odds of a bootloader unlock in the near future.

mostly because there's no easy/good way to get them youtube or youtube kids. You can sideload the app (if you're fairly technically savvy), but Amazon doesn't let you "share" sideloaded apps with kids profiles. So then they have to use your adult profile, and then they're on an account that has all your payment information. Also their app store is chock full of crappy, overpriced games that exist solely for the purpose of tricking children into buying them.

Also, the parental controls are a real pain to use. It's just slow, convoluted, confusing, unintuitive. Generally just extremely annoying to use.

And it just sucks being locked into their garbage ecosystem. There's also games I have already purchased on the Google Play store (minecraft), and I'd have to rebuy them on Amazon's app store
