No, that's perfectly legit.

When you get a $15 Target Gift Card for spending $50 on household, you're taxed on the $50.

The gift card is not an upfront discount. you get a real gift card to spend after.

Had it been a rebate you submit for a $200 gift card, you'd be taxed on the $700. No offense, but your logic here is incorrect, the phone is $700, the gift card is a bonus that comes with the $700 phone

I agree if Amazon displays the checkout breakdown like target. They are not. Regardless, those who like this deal can go ahead and buy it.
