While I agree, the Compendium is great for kids. I have been buying these as a little gift every every month or so for the 8 year old in my life. They love getting them and proud of their collection on their shelf (only have two more to buy). The other reason I can see getting it is if you're a big fan and want one to actually read that isn't like pulling out a massive leather bound volume. This way you can keep the Complete Set in good collection on the shelf. Might be overkill, but that's what I would do. I have this amazing version sitting next to my Far Side Collection on my office bookshelves.

wait for the large box set to go on sale unless you really need the smaller size because to complete this collection you will pay more, they only put the first few books on sale to trap you.

Good call, I bought all the other volumes as well (aside from 7 since it's out Oct 6th) as they all appear to be on Early Prime Day sale. Thanks so much OP. Fond memories of Calvin and Hobbes with my brother as a kid. Hoping my kids will treasure this series as much as we did.

I bought that set when they first published it about 20 years ago. They still look great on my bookshelf and I have no regrets, but it's really not the ideal format for just reading and enjoying. Each book is quite big and heavy so it's not like you can easily lounge and read. I've found myself re-buying all of it again in paperback format so my kids can enjoy them more easily.
