I want to start running but was told asics break down a lot quicker than other brands and I see why...they barely have any rubber under them and the upper looks like it will snag & stuff easily.

a lot of the upper (ish) end running shoes try to be very light which is a hit on them lasting longer. I would say asics are usually pretty long lasting in general though these in particular are a mixed bag. You can see very thorough reviews of running shows here: https://www.runrepeat.com/asics-sonicblast

run repeat do a great job if you are looking for very specific features

My kids all run and I've bought them piles of running shoes. I always thought these new shoes with so little tread were weird. Last year I picked up running. I use Asics (Nimbus 27 and Superblast 3). I'm on my 4th pair of running shoes. I put about 400-500 miles on each pair. I still have my previous 3 pairs in my closet. The bottoms still have tread. The uppers still look near new. It is the foam that starts to break down first. It just loses its bounce and support. So, surprisingly, the rubber on the bottom and the uppers aren't a problem for me.

This is cheap for a reason. Not too many good reviews, and the sonicblast 2 was just recently released and that is way better they said

This is generally my experience with ASICS too and it's why they're my personal favorite shoe brand (and nope, I'm not endorsed, but I wish, I'd love free shoes, haha)! I have read both in this thread and elsewhere that this particular model might not be the greatest though, which is too bad... but I usually also find that ASICS have less random bits of plastic that poke you, less uncomfortable shells on their more solid shoes (I would never really call any shells "comfortable" but theirs are close enough!), and a good tight feeling when laced even if the sizing is slightly off, which happens sometimes when you get different shoe types from them.

In short, I can't vouch for this specific shoe, but I can vouch for ASICS; I usually like them over Adidas, Nike, and everyone else. I actually wish that WASN'T the case because I'd like more variety, but everyone else just puts too many bits and bobs in their shoes that poke or squeeze or otherwise make them uncomfortable.
