If you don't know what this CPU is, it's probably not for you.

Threadripper systems are popular for running local AI right now, in addition to other things.

It's kind like buying a car vs. a truck. In this case, normal desktop processors are cars, while workstation processors are the trucks. But the TL;DR is that these aren't the best choices for gaming, and are a bad use money for normal productivity work.

I posted a bit more about it in this thread:
https://slickdeals.net/f/19983957-amd-ryzen-threadripper-pro-5955wx-16-core-4-0ghz-socket-swrx8-280w-desktop-processor-780-or-less-free-shipping?p=186566202#post186566202

Also, these use DDR4. With RAMpacolypse, DDR4 systems are viable alternatives.

you can get Threadripper CPUs (9995) up to 96 cores/192 threads. You also get a ton of lanes - so multiple video cards. Look at the Lenovo ThinkStation P8 to see what this line can do. It is not even close to a 270k in performance (much more)- but a lot more expensive (much more). This is the Diesel truck to the Dodge Charger 270k.

In general, is it good for gaming?

Many of which are completely wasted due to the INSANE decisions made by motherboard manufacturers to install a piddly 2-3 x16 slots. My x370 has more x16 slots than many Treadripper builds. They are, of course, slower... but I need more slots that can physically accommodate x2+ cards, not faster ones.

It's all about segmenting the market so no one can build something cheap in a roundabout way. My general purpose server is EPYC and the board has seven x16 v4 slots.

No, not for the price, you can get other processors that will get you more FPS for significantly less in price.

Threadrippers are more like a work horse. They are great for servers, AI, rendering, video editing, etc.

Right now the best gaming CPUs are AMDs that end in x3D

Funny that you say it's like buying a car. It'll sure cost you as much as one if you max out the RAM.
