DeWalt battery chainsaws and pole saws come across as a convenient fit for routine trimming, limbing, and smaller downed trees, especially where gas prep and noise are a hassle. The 18 inch and 20 volt tools are described as easier to live with for homeowners, and the 60 volt saws are called beasts that can rival gas for longer cuts. The main caution is that battery saws struggle more on big trees, palms, and dirt work, and warranty length may depend on date codes if the item came through an unauthorized channel. A practical pick for lighter property cleanup.

Common Questions (4)

  • For routine trimming, fallen limbs, and smaller trees, the DeWalt battery saw is often enough and is easier to live with because it avoids gas/oil prep and startup hassle. Gas still makes more sense for very large trees or long continuous cutting, where it can have more endurance.

  • Yes. The saw can drain batteries quickly on bigger cuts, and having multiple batteries keeps work moving instead of waiting on recharge time.

  • It can, but a reciprocating saw with a long demo blade is better near the ground because a chainsaw will destroy itself in dirt. For limbing and faster cuts above ground, the chainsaw is the better tool.

  • Yes. Warranty coverage may be based on the date code on the tool rather than the receipt date, and grey-market items sold through unauthorized channels may have shorter coverage if they sat in warehouses before sale.

I wouldn't be cutting down a legit tree with a battery powered saw, I'm pretty much just going to be using it for limbs so why not get a battery powered pole chainsaw. .
Finally someone with common sense that has 1st hand experience with battery powered chain saw. I do have Dewalt polesaw with a keyed extra segment which gives me a lot of range. I also have the electric pruner with extended handle for thinner branches. It's just if you want to take down a tree or a palm you'll curse your life with battery powered chain saw. It had the job done but lots of struggle, lots of downtime.I try to get most tools battery powered but the ones I learned the hard way you cant is serious leafblower and chainsaw. Also zeroturn tractor and push mower. These are a must to be gas. Yes I have acreage, yes I have 40 trees ,

That said I got
DEWALT DCM200B 20V MAX Belt Sander today

Why not lead with something like this, versus just generically saying all electric chainsaws are terrible?

Most people I see in the market for an electric chainsaw are interested in them for light duty work, not downing huge trees.

FWIW, agree with you 100% that some things gotta be gas. As much as I'd love an electric pickup truck - I sure as hell can't tow a boat with one long range unless I want to deal with a lot of grief on any necessary charging stops.

no battery chain saw is slick ever. You are better off with a battery powered jigsaw and a very good long blade. Battery powered chainasaw is an oxymoron.
I have 4 gas chainsaws 14->36" bar plus a gas pole saw, I end up grabbing my 16" 40V ryobi more often than the others put together. I got it so I could do some cleanup on the weekends when getting an earlier start than it would be neighborly to be running a gas chainsaw but I was surprised how useful it was.

When taking down a large tree or cutting firewood I will collect the appropriate gas saws but one off smaller trees and cutting up fallen limbs the battery saw is more convenient

Saying that a battery powered chainsaw is an oxymoron is a moronic statement. I have two gas powered chainsaws along with two battery powered chainsaws. The two battery powered chainsaws are the DeWalt pole saw and the 8-in pruning chainsaw. Both of them are awesome and I will use them in every possible situation before I would even think about digging out one of the gas powered chainsaws.

Sure, if you are regularly breaking down massive trees, a gas-powered chainsaw is probably the way to go. However, for 99% of general homeowners, a decent battery powered chainsaw is going to be more than enough to meet everything they need in a more convenient, more maintainable, more user-friendly package. And I'm just talking about the 20v chainsaws, which will already meet most people's needs. For bigger efforts, the 60v DeWalt chainsaws are beasts that can compete handily with gas powered chainsaws. The only time gas wins as if you're going to be cutting for 8 hours straight.

I remember Covid times and all the confirmation bias statements users were using to reinforce how smart they are by using 2 masks and taking 3 boosters a day.
Not only that you have 4 chainsaws, yes he has FOUR chainsaws, but you also have pole saw and a pruner. Forest man entered the chat. To bring more weight to his argument he shouldve mentioned the 20 sharpened axes plus hundreds hand saws he keeps around the house just in case . Why adults like to overstate facts and lie to random strangers is a mystery only DrPhil.com can solve

First, I do have 4 chainsaws total. This isn't made up, and it's not particularly extraordinary. However, you seem to have trouble with reading comprehension, because I clearly stated that I have 2 gas powered chainsaws and 2 battery powered, and the two battery powered ones are the pole saw and pruning saw. The two gas powered are a smaller 14" bar I picked up prior to the battery powered ones, and a larger 18" bar that was passed along to me when my dad replaced his gas chainsaw with a battery powered one.

As for axes, I have one splitting axe and I have a hatchet or two. I haven't counted the handsaws, but there aren't more than about a dozen of them. I don't really keep any of these around "just in case", I keep them around to use. It's not a particularly fancy or impressive collection, actually. I have a decent number of good-sized trees that need regular maintenance, and I also like doing a bit of carpentry and woodworking as a hobby. Sorry to disappoint you that I don't have 20 axes and hundreds of hand saws, though. It appears that the reality of my garage is no match for your imagination of insults.

Why people like to say silly things (like claiming that "battery powered chainsaw is an oxymoron") and then try to defend their silly comments by making up more silly things and calling other people liars I have no idea idea. That said, if you're a Dr. Phil fan, that probably explains a little bit of it.
