This is a 4 bay USB C enclosure for spinning SATA drives and bulk storage, with 10Gbps connectivity and HDMI video pass through for laptop presentations. The enclosure can work well for Plex expansion, homelab use, and software RAID or Storage Spaces, and the interface is fast enough for hard drives even if the drives themselves are the bottleneck. The HDMI output depends on the host USB C port supporting video and on using the USB C to C cable. Caveats include JBOD only, no NAS or RAID hardware, extra brackets needed for 2.5 inch drives, and concerns about heat, noise, and occasional disconnects.

Divide by 8. 10 Gbps, not 10 GBps. This is maybe 900-1000 MB/s, much slower than most SSDs. Good enough for four HDs if they're not SSDs. If you're, say, loading a 200GB model into RAM, well, it's gonna be a while.
It's an external enclosure. It uses USB 3.2 gen 2. That's the standard. You're comparing M.2/NVMe internal SSD speeds to the de facto standard for USB. What idiot is going to load their LLMs over USB?

"blazing" 10Gbps... In 1999.
You wouldn't be able to touch this with 3.5HDDs anyway

$94.80 for the enclosure and only $4,000 for the drives!
Ya no kidding. I had a 10TB fail the other day and was worried they would not replace it with current pricing but they arewoot.. I've never had a drive just flat out fail before, makes me nervous for the other drives.

10Gbps is 10 Gigabits per sec. Not 10 Gigabytes. With that said 10 Gbps is still plenty good enough.

Lots of weird configs lately, slow interfaces with no LAN, weird RAID options—are they trying to find economical configs to hold them over until the supply chain isn't as thoroughly fʋcked? Maybe it was always this way and I just never noticed. ʅ(́◡◝)ʃ

Looks like 22tb max per drive on this one - unfortunately the coupon does not work on the higher cap version

It's 10 gigaBITS (lower case b) per second. Thats 1.25 gigabytes per second.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

It says that it is hot swappable, haha did you look at the hdd install instructions? You have to take it completely apart to install a hard drive!

Reviews say this thing gets loud, hot, disconnects for no reason, and is not hot swappable. Also it's just JBOD with zero raid... I can think of some use cases for something like this, but not for my needs.

JBOD is exactly the kind of thing I'd want for a modern software RAID where the host is in control. Since I care about ease of data recovery, there's no way I'd go for some black box hardware RAID. Just give me a bunch of disks and I'll use well-known tools to decide where to put the data. But that does demand more of the CPU and data lines. And the (un)ease of disassembly/reassembly might be a problem.

Meh, why spend $$$ on a tier 3 NAS unit when hard drives nearly cost a kidney.
Just spend the few extra hundy and get a Synology or QNAP support and reliability.... Drop in the bucket.
Heck, even a Terramaster would be an improvement.

I am not telling anybody where I get my hard drives for cheap right now, whew!

just kidding, I'm forced to buy 8 used 3TB drives on ebay and put them through a PERC H310 because larger drives are ridiculously expensive (literally up 400-500% in one year)

fuggen datacenters.

This was a solid option for me when my Plex was getting full. Had a bunch of 2-4TB SATA drives laying around allowing me to use MS Storage Spaces to make various volumes to store my data until HDD prices go down. I bought 2, 1 with a pool with internal sata drives, one standalone.

They do disconnect for a second or so from time to time, but by the time I click on the notice, they pop right back up without any interaction or interruption. Solid choice if you're not looking for a hot swap bay on the cheap to get you the extra storage space for a software raid. Would absolutely recommend. Have only used the PC usb port, plugging it into the other port after software raid is in place, it will not recognize the raid. But once you have it set up, it's good to go.

These enclosures are meant for spinning drives and bulk storage. If you're buying this for SSDs you're doing it wrong
