The Retroid Pocket 5 is a compact Android retro handheld that stands out for strong emulation at its price, especially PS2, GameCube, Wii, and much of the Switch library, with some light Steam and Android gaming possible too. The 5.5 inch OLED screen, larger controls, and clean black design are recurring highlights, and newer batches appear to ship with 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Setup takes some tinkering, and the device is not truly pocketable. The small screen and 60Hz streaming latency are the main drawbacks, and more demanding Xbox or PlayStation 3 gaming still calls for a pricier handheld.

Common Questions (5)

  • It is not truly pocketable, so most people will want a bag, sling, or backpack for transport. The 5.5-inch screen and larger controls are praised for usability, but several users find the display small for older eyes and prefer larger-screen handhelds for comfort.

  • It can handle PS2 and GameCube well, with many users reporting strong Wii performance and a large chunk of the Switch library. More demanding Xbox, PS3, and some Switch titles can be hit-or-miss, and heavier PC/Steam games are only a bonus on this 865-based device.

  • Recent units are reportedly shipping with 12GB RAM, and multiple buyers confirmed receiving 12GB models. Older listing pages may not have specified the memory amount, but current batches appear to have moved to 12GB.

  • It does not come with games. It ships as a blank Android handheld with preloaded emulators, and you load your own ROMs; it can also run Android games from the Play Store and act as a streaming device.

  • The RP5 is commonly used at 60Hz, but recent batches reportedly include a 120Hz OLED panel. Firmware and calibration are the limiting factors, and tools like PULSE can switch supported units to 120Hz.

I would hardly consider PS3 and XB360 a joke on Android. I just finished Infamous using ARMSX3 with my Odin 3. The progress made in just the last 4 months has been nothing short of incredible. Give it just a few more months and the Android ports of the emulators will be to to par with RPCS3 and Xenia. You would have been correct a few months ago but I think you need to update your info and try the latest versions of Xendroid, X360 Mobile, and ARMSX3 on an SD8 Elite chip device like the Odin 3 or Konkr Pocket Fit. I wouldn't bother trying them on the RP5 or an SD8 Gen 2 devices like the Thor -- they can't handle it. At least not yet. That might improve with time though.
I would say the fact we're naming game(_), singular, when discussing multiple systems' playable state says a lot, also you acknowledge that we'll have to wait even more time for 2005 and 2006 systems to finally to be beyond an alpha state for Android emulation two decades later may suggest buying hardware now, for that unknown / unset / unguaranteed event to even occur, and what chipset it will best support, could be a fool's errand today. My point stands.

Spend 2x - 3x more today, and perhaps, by 2027, you might have lucked into the correct chipset for the emulator built as a hobby by a 3rd party to finally be ready? Let's not even talk about how fragmented the emulator scene is and how often projects are abandoned and change hands. Name any Switch emulator....ever.

Though I'd be interested in leaening how you made hundreds selling the Thor, your point is valid. I have a rog ally x that Im just getting into to play the fancier Final Fantasy games. I also have a RG476h that I really like, but I have a dead zone between the rog and the emulators.

Recent ebay sales are all over, but it looks like you can get ~$100-120 for a 476. So in theory I get an additional 4gb and an updated processor (that is a bit long in tooth but still works) for ~$40-50
I bought the Thor via AliExpress during coupon's and CB, paid less than $300 OTD, maybe $275, for a Pro 12-256, sold last month on eBay for $625 in like new condition. Currently you could probably get a Thor Pro (during heavy CB offers) for $350-370. So resell value is there there if you wanted to try then flip if it didn't float your boat.

FWIW, I had a RG476H and really liked it but it was weak compared to the RP5, especially the 12GB current version. But I think the RP5 is a pretty decent goldiloocks zone of power vs price. Would I rather have a RP6, sure, do I think it is worth nearly double the money to open up almost no extra emulation, no. That being said, the 476 screen was really good and 4:3 if that is your thing. I also like the hand feel better. Another 4:3 system to maybe consider would be the RG Slide, same chipset as the 476 and you can get them new on AE for roughly $110 using coupons and not even considering CB. Never tried the Slide but my understanding it is a love or hate type thing.

Well, the 12gig Thor sells for over $400 now new and frequently goes out of stock/has long wait times. I don't find it hard to believe you could sell it used for enough to buy a $250 RP6.
Like I alluded to in my other comment, I bought a Thor (after coupon's and CB) for less than $300 and sold for over $600 on eBay...USED. Due to lead times you'll be invested in this situation for quite some time so unless you were trying to flip multiple units, may not be worth the effort for most people. Is doable though, especially since people on eBay will pay fat $ not to wait in line. I also have perfect feedback and take care of my stuff, including packaging. So I think that adds some perceived value on eBay.

*And no, I don't consider what I did as scalping. I bought the unit for my own use, didn't fit my use case, and sold The market paid what the market paid. I've had some people suggest I should have sold it at a loss....just out of principle....LOL.

If you need portability, RP6. Otherwise, Portal.
Odin 2 is Snapdragon 8Gen2 I think. From what I heard, you need a 8Gen1 at least if you want to run that app that allows you transform your unit into a steam deck.

This is a 865 about a 6 year old SoC. I have it in my current S20u phone. It's ok for emulation, especially on a smaller display. But you lose out on the 4x,6x 8X AA and other upscale options. Which on a tablet 10+ in I can clearly see.

I'll wait a few more years, not in a major rush. I just like playing around but hardly even use more then 10 hrs a month on games

did you get 8gb or 12gb? Thought I saw somewhere that all newer RP5 are shipping with 12

**update I pulled the trigger. Most sites were saying retroid ran out of 8gb so this should come with 12gb
I got home and was able to check it, and, surprisingly, I got 12GB ram on my RP5.....I didn't think it would be since when I bought it ($168 at Aliexpress on 9/14) it didn't say either way about the ram.

My understanding is Retroid ran out of 8gb sticks and plans to use 12gb rolling forward. I can confirm my unit from August is 12gb. I also saw a post the screen should actually be 120hz however firmware still limits it to 60hz so even if true (haven't checked mine yet), doesn't matter unless someone can unlock the frame rate somehow.

I have a samsung galaxy s23, if I'm not mistaken my phone is essentially very similar specs to this? I picked up a used razer kishi controller that works really well, I have gamepass so I've mostly just used it to play around with a couple games streaming via gamepass and I've been considering picking up something like this or a steam deck, ally, odin etc. but honestly I feel like the phone is pretty powerful for what it is so I'm not entirely sure why I'd be picking up something like this.

Retroid 6 or Odin 2 Portal? Would rather buy once, cry once.
If it's a buy once cry once why not Odin 3 pro or Thor Pro/Max?
