The Retroid Pocket 5 is a compact Android retro handheld that stands out for strong emulation at its price, especially PS2, GameCube, Wii, and much of the Switch library, with some light Steam and Android gaming possible too. The 5.5 inch OLED screen, larger controls, and clean black design are recurring highlights, and newer batches appear to ship with 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Setup takes some tinkering, and the device is not truly pocketable. The small screen and 60Hz streaming latency are the main drawbacks, and more demanding Xbox or PlayStation 3 gaming still calls for a pricier handheld.

For anyone looking to push this out to a TV you should be aware that android has inherent input lag. This input lag is not minor or trival, and is universally downplayed by so called reviewers.

I bought the odin 2 based on all the reviews and hype, and when connected to an hdmi source, the input lag is so bad you can't jump on a goomba in super mario world. They did patch it, but it was still noticable and bad.

If you are going to play exclusively on the handheld screen its fine, but if you want a switch like experience, you are better off with a linux device.

Heads up if you're buying this as a gift rather than for yourself. Reading back through, one guy ordered on 9/14 and had it in hand by the 2nd, but somebody else said waits can run one to two months depending on the luck of the draw. That's a big spread. I'd rather order it stupid early than stand there Christmas morning explaining why there's nothing to open.

To whit, I believe there are Linux builds for the Retroid Pocket 5, in the flavor of Rocknix. There's also Rocknix for the Odin 2, so you can install it yourself.

Thanks for jinxing. Bought mine the first day (said 4 left) and apparently it's shipped though my Ali tracking doesn't exist. I'm not worried, these things happen and gotta pay to play.

Just wanted to echo this post that if you're thinking for a gift in the next couple weeks, I wouldn't wait. Esp as 11/11 approaches

Got an Odin 2 Portal and set it up last week. It needs tweaking and some specific drivers to run various emulators but once it's set up, it can run anything up to and including Switch games nearly flawlessly.
How long did your Odin 2 portal take to ship? I've got one waiting for over 2 weeks now

This is very baller... but that is a very small screen.

For perspective:
  • Regular iPhone is over 6"
  • iPhone Pro Max is almost 7"...
  • Steam Deck is 7"...
  • Asus ROG Ally is 7"...
  • Legion Go is 8"...
Personally, I need a much bigger screen for my old eyes.
Are you not aware of aspect ratios? This screen is a lot bigger than an Iphone's lmao

An RP5 can absolutely play steam games. Show me a handheld under 1k that can emulate Xbox or PS3.
An RP5 can play a limited selection of Steam games given that it has an 865. Do not imply that it can play "steam games" in general. That is absolutely misleading. Anyone that buys RP5 should consider Steam to be a bonus. Anyone that wants to play more demanding Steam games should consider a PC Handheld, Odin 3 (S8 Elite), Ayaneo (S8G3 equivalent or better) or at a minimum a S8G2 processor (Thor, Nova, etc.)

Whether PS3 or XBox emulation is mature or not on Android is not the point. My comment was addressing "why people want more powerful android devices". This is ABSOLUTELY a reason. The emulators are improving and are now at the point where you can run some XBox/PS3 games on a S8 Elite chip.
