Amazon's car purchase promo is mainly a way to get a new Hyundai or Kia with a $1,500 gift card while skipping some of the usual dealership hassle. The strongest upside is convenience, and the promo can still pair with dealer negotiation in some cases, which can bring the effective price down further. Pricing and process can be uneven, though, with Amazon sometimes listing the same car above the dealer website and the handoff depending heavily on whether the dealership's Amazon specialist is available. Hyundai itself also draws repeated concern over engine, electrical, and EV charging issues, so the deal looks best when the specific car and dealer have been vetted carefully.

These prices are way too high even if you were able to negotiate them down. The $1500 wouldn't even be worth it

Since you went through the process, how did you pay? Did they take the deposit on a credit card on file at Amazone?
Get preapproved for financing through your own bank or credit union first to ensure you can get the best rate. Then put a "reservation" payment in through Amazon of like $500 on a credit card; think that might be the minimum IIRC but can be any card.

You then choose whether you're paying "cash" (your bank's financing) at the dealership or will finance with the dealership. I think you fill out their application at that point if you choose to finance with them and they determine your interest rate in about a minute, but it limits your options to the banks that work with Amazon; the dealer may have a local network that can get you an even better rate. Either way, that notifies the dealer that the car is being sold and sets an appointment for you to complete the process with them.

Whatever you put as the downpayment should be reflected on your final invoice from the dealer, regardless of if you chose "cash" or to finance through them. Make sure that happens! I initially chose cash on Amazon, and when I went to finish the purchase, my bank then informed me that they would have to cut a paper check instead of a wire transfer for "security purposes". The dealer "completed" the Amazon deal and somehow that caused the $500 reservation payment to go to limbo, so the dealer wound up having to send me a refund check once Amazon released the payment to them.

Bit of a rocky process in my case because the dealer had never done it and their specialist had just been put on work restrictions due to pregnancy. But got it done and saved almost 10% on an EV that's hard to get discounted.

Gonna guess that all the EVs would not have that issue.
The Hyundai and Kia EVs have an issue with the ICCU (the "brains") seeing sudden and catastrophic failures due to overheating. There's now a free repair for affected models to replace the cooling connections to the ICCU. The internet would have you believe it has happened to 95% of their EVs on the road, but Hyundai/Kia repair data shows it's much closer to 1-2%, and on the high end Consumer Reports says it could be as much as 10% but as low as 2% based on their data. So, yes. Still some issues, and more than other brands like Tesla, but they are actively working to fix it and the battery and charging system are covered by the 10yr/100,000 mile warranty.

I hope this works so much and we can buy every brand off amazon and not set foot in a car stealership EVER again!!!
It does work. Carvana and the like have been eating into dealership sales for years now. Walking through the parking lot at my employer, there are probably 40 Carvana plates. Amazon wants a piece of that pie and by working directly with dealers, they don't even need infrastructure to buy, transport, and store the cars like Carvana does. Dealers are hurting from online sales but they aren't totally going away because most people still want a test drive before purchase. In fairness, dealerships get a bad rap which is largely deserved after decades of shady tactics. BUT that's highly dependent on the dealer you work with; do your research. "Vibe check" them, if you will. The dealers I've worked with have been great, but I vet them several times over weeks to weed out the shady ones.

Maybe I'm missing something, but scrolling through a few makes/models, it looks like mostly average-junk vehicles with average-above average mileage and consistently above average prices. better off on cars.com and reaching out to dealers directly.
Definitely better off at cars.com, I'm not trusting Amazon with such a huge purchase.

IDK why you get downvoted, even though you're missing my point. Amazon should not be a second dealer. They should be a dealer like any other. Carvana do mostly used car sales. If they did new car sales, online car sales it would be great, because new car sales are a hot mess right now. Now, you don't need to vet anything. Just when buying follow some simple rules - never go in a dealership, negotiate out the door price, don't turn in a vehicle, don't use leasing.

Thanks. Your point wasn't completely clear to me. You said you hope "this" works so well that nobody ever has to go to a dealership again--I assumed you meant it in the way it currently is being done, not as Amazon becoming the dealership. That's a whole different thing than what I thought you meant, and admittedly I'm not personally comfortable with that idea.

Ultimately, I think the US really needs better consumer protection laws and a robust CFPB to enforce them. That way car dealers, lenders, and other businesses can't have predatory practices at all.

But I do agree that buying a car online is a WAY better process than even the best dealerships I've been to. But you also lose the ability to negotiate that out the door price (which is what everyone should have going into a transaction and stick to it with a grip so tight they'd have to rip your arm off).

Hyundai only? Do their engines still explode, or are there specific engines to avoid with the bad pistons issues etc.?
I've purchased 5 sonatas since 2018, zero, and I mean zero problems

DO NOT GET AN HYUNDAI..... MY engine just got blown and it was a new car with 26 miles in the highway. Super frustrated and dealing with dealership now. I filed a complaint to Hyundai and now hoping to either get refund or best case scenario a new replacement.
Which model and which engine?

Had a 2005 Elantra that last 17 years with minimal issues. Did Hyundai get better then get bad again?

Correct me if i am wrong. Isn't this deal much better for leasing since you get 1500 off the lease which amount for much better deal than if only 1500 of the total car price if you gonna buy it.
