Is this the equivalent of a miniPC paired with a DAS, meaning I have to choose an OS to install on it.
Or does UGREEN have their own NAS and ecosystem to install apps like QNAP and Synology does?

Looking to upgrade my aging QNAP TS-469 Pro to be more video streaming friendly.

Not a good price. It was $520 3 months ago, and it was during RAMageddon too.

Having owned two synologys, I could not be happier with the dxp4800 plus. Lots of features for the price. It has been rock solid for 6 months.

Have been using this for about a year, had 96gb ddr5 and ran just fine. Right now I have 32gb and 4x 20tb with 2x 2tbnvme as read cache drives. Running plex, Romm, and home assistant perfectly fine in portainer. Mariushosting is an excellent resource for these nas units.

I remember getting 2x12tb server drives for $90 each a few years ago. Now the same USED drives are $340 each. Such a sad state of affairs when even many years old used components have increased 3x-4x in price.

There are other diskless NAS options out there that you can install your own OS onto for less than these overpriced brands.

Just get cheapest desktop pc you can find and put largest drives you can find. Then install truenas and you will run circles around this ugreen. If you're going to complain about power consumption then sure get this and be ready to buy a new one in 2-3 years

Ugreen sucks, I would not trust their NAS at all. They can't even seem to make a reliably functioning card reader!
I have their older DXP8800 and loved it so much that i bought the IDX6011pro as well. They are both fantastic. I highly recommend them.

The MINISFORUM N5 Air is over 3x better in CPU performance and has a far better port selection with a full sized PCIE slot. Dual NICs with 10gb and 5gb too! You Can get it with 16GB of DDR5 for $720 or provide your own and get it without RAM (still has 64GB internal storage) for $520. I'd personally go this route for anyone looking to self-host things!
I can't speak for the Air but i have a minisforum n5pro and its ok. Software is appalling. No native ssh or terminal. I replaced it with ZimaOS for a while then moved to unraid. Both worked fairly well. The hardware is powerful but a couple of programs didn't have drivers written to utilize the graphics. AI specifically and transcoding. There are workarounds but that's the problem. I don't want workarounds.

it ships with UGOS their own take on NAS software. I like it. It may not be as mature as Synology but i think its not too far off. I run about 70 docker apps 24/7 and it runs it easily.

100% this. I'd also add that Minisforum is a pretty respectable miniPC maker and that its H255 is actually 8845HS w/o an NPU. That's a lot of horsepower (if needed) and ~20W idle.
Btw DD5 has on-die ECC which covers the majority of memory issues.

I was hoping Minisforum would be running some promo on the Prime days but I guess I'll have to wait now until the Black Friday.

The NPU driver issues is really an AMD problem. GPU and CPU drivers could be an older kernel problem that Unraid is running on? AMD upstreams their drivers to the Linux kernel, so you shouldn't be having too many issues.

Why would you use unraid vs any distro + zfs?

This isn't to say N5s are w/o issues. There's this one for example : https://www.reddit.com/r/MINISFOR...orruption/

Do you have drives to populated it? I doubt it will get much cheaper if any by BF, but the hard drives are what's going to be your biggest roadblock... unless you have money to spend in which case just buy it now and be done with it.

DXP6800Pro owner since Kickstarter. Even despite I use only 2 out of those bays so far. Just for i5 and the rest of hardware, that it would last long. Especially after all the pain with Celeron in Synology.

A bit over a year ago, I think it was a similar price, hard drives were like 3x cheaper at the time. I was bouncing between Synology, Ugreen and QNAP, I wanted something plug and play without having to think too much about setting it up. Originally it was going to be a Plex server primarily as I hated having to turn on my computer whenever someone wanted to watch a movie, but I fell out of love with Plex and fell in love with Jellyfin, so similar use case. Also use it for backing up phones of everyone in the family, work documents, etc. I think this is around Synology started to push the "you must use our approved hard drives" nonsense so immediately that one went out, plus their hardware always seemed a bit weak for the price that you pay, but whatever it was company policy that did it for me, then it literally was Ugreen had a sale, and the hardware was better than the same priced QNap one and I bought it.

Of course this is when hard drive prices were like 1/3 what they are now, so I wouldn't buy a NAS in today's market. That said, knock on wood, it still has been going fine with no problems, but if I had to replace a drive... ugh... well luckily I have about 2 more years of warranty on those.
