Dungeon Crawler Carl is a fast, funny LitRPG series with strong world building, memorable characters, and an audiobook version that gets especially high praise for Jeff Hays and SoundBooth Theater. The Kindle edition is a cheap entry point, and the Audible add on is reported to stay around $5 to $6 once the ebook is owned. The story starts with a rough, tutorial heavy first book and lots of battle detail, then shifts toward richer character work and broader world building. The main caveat is that the early pacing and juvenile humor do not land for everyone, and the series keeps you waiting for the next volume.
The audiobook can be added for about $6 when purchased with the $0.99 Kindle book.
The SoundBooth Theater audiobook includes music and sound effects that enhance the listening experience.
The story expands into richer world-building and characters as the series continues.
Kindle Unlimited can include the entire series, and a free trial can make the overall access cheaper.
Book 1 can feel rough because it spends a lot of time on granular power-up details and early tutorial content.
The audiobook experience may include a tutorial slog that some listeners skip to reach the real story.
The series can be hard to enjoy for some readers due to juvenile writing and frequent sexual innuendos.
A practical downside is waiting for the next book release after finishing the current volume.

But you could also just buy the first book for $1 today and pay $6 to see if you like it enough before buying the rest. As others have said, the first book is very granular with showing how the battles work as the characters are also learning how it works. But as the books continue, the focus of the actual play-by-play of the battles goes down in favor of the world-building, relationships, and the characters' pasts. If it hadn't changed the storytelling after book 1 or 2, I would have had to drop them too. Book 3 is when it really clicked for me, but it definitely gets better as it goes on. I'm finishing up book 6 at the moment.
