Lyca Mobile stands out for very cheap plans with usable data, especially for a second line or a number you do not rely on every day. The 18GB plan is described as fast enough for everyday use, and after the high speed data is gone, speeds reportedly drop to about 3 Mbps, which still works well. Taxes are low, and the online account can show the account number and transfer PIN for porting. The main drawbacks are recurring billing and support headaches, with reports of blocked payments, slow replies, and difficult port outs that can put a number at risk.

  • Travelers who want a cheap data-only eSIM, because the plan can be paired with a separate travel eSIM while keeping calls and texts on another line.

  • Drivers who need occasional navigation data, because maps can be downloaded ahead of time and traffic-free GPS still works without a live connection.

  • Light-data phone users who can live with slower speeds after the allowance, because throttled service can still be usable at about 3 Mbps.

  • People who want a low-cost second line for a new number, because it worked well for several months as an eSIM line.

  • People who need fast customer support or easy cancellation, because replies can take weeks and billing can continue after cancellation attempts.

  • People who need reliable porting out of their main number, because account transfer can fail and leave the number in limbo or lost.

  • Families or caregivers setting up a line for someone else, because port-out and support hassles can make leaving the service difficult.

  • Drivers who rely on live traffic and continuous data in Android Auto or CarPlay, because offline maps lose traffic information and call/text-only service cannot supply it.

I've heard that Lyca's customer service is among the worst and that it can be extremely difficult to transfer your number out once you're done with them. I'm thinking of getting Lyca for my elderly relative for about 12 months, then transferring the number to US Mobile. Has anyone here done this? What was your experience?
Is it worth the potential hassle, or would you just go directly with another carrier even if it costs a little more?
park your main number at a cheapest no data plan, and buy lyca only for its data. recent smartphones with esim usually support 2 sims active at the same time.

Yes! That is exactly what I am doing. On Android phone, you can tell it, which of the two SIM to use for call, SMS and data. For (call, SMS) use the cheapest plan with no data. For data, I use travellers esim. I use MobiMatter and eSIMDB to find good rates. The cheapest I found is 30 days, 10 GB for $10. It includes hotspot and top up. I do the same when I travel too and use those two apps to get deals. Screw the top 3 (ATT, Verizon, Tmobile).

Who do you use for esim data? We're only in the US for a short time per year.
Install these two apps to find travellers esim deals : MobiMatter and eSIMDB

Yes it is. I use combination of free data (use VPN if not comfortable) and traveller's esim for my data. I love saving money, but you have to be pro-active.
Which travellers Esim for data do you use and at what rates?

This is perfect timing. My Mint service will be up at the end of this month. I'll transfer to Lyca and stay there for a couple of months then buy the best deal around Thanksgiving/Christmas

Last time, I had to raise a FCC complaint in order to get the port out pin. The customer support was super annoying and literally asking for "reason" for port out. They will hold your number hostage.

That could work for my own phone, but probably not for an elderly relative who isn't tech savvy. If anything goes wrong with either sim or the data settings, I'd basically be creating a support headache for myself. I'd rather keep their phone simple with one carrier and one line.

I pay $30 for 12 months, unlimited call and text, no data. I found this plan on ebay.

Then I use traveller esim of other company, it is $6 for 5 gig or $10 for 10 gig a month. I mostly use free WiFi from home or at library or business using VPN if I am nervous.

My plans are cheaper.
For your usage, I would highly recommend TextNow! Completely FREE service, unlimited calls and texts and some limited FREE internet for maps, and chat programs.

I would only ever use it for a throwaway number, and not your main one. I used their service for my backup phone and it was a nightmare to port out, it feels like you can easily end up losing your number.

I was under the same impression year ago, until I realized it is NOT the case any more.

When you activate, remember you zip code used;
After you activate, signup online account on computer; once logged in, on Dashboard, you click "Manage account" in the left pane; then you click "view" next to "Account & Pin number".

That is the Account# and the NTP/Transfer PIN/Account PIN, whatever you call it.

Just did this a week ago. I double checked with customer service via email twice, and that worked. Good luck.

If I were to get ONLY textnow, and maybe another data only sim/esim, will WhatsApp work? in either or both situations?

What is meant by $5 credit for international roaming? Is it every month and accumulates or expires every month? The URL for the $108 for 12 month plan takes to a 1 month trial option. There is no list of roaming countries on the website - or not easily found. I would rather stay/look for an alternate with Red Pocket.

Yes it is monthly. The plan and its bonus credit last for a 30-day period and expire after 30 days.
When you click on the link to offer, you will see another link that will take you to the list of countries. (See pic) - HTH Smilie
