I've heard that Lyca's customer service is among the worst and that it can be extremely difficult to transfer your number out once you're done with them. I'm thinking of getting Lyca for my elderly relative for about 12 months, then transferring the number to US Mobile. Has anyone here done this? What was your experience?
Is it worth the potential hassle, or would you just go directly with another carrier even if it costs a little more?

I have used them in the past and it was difficult to get the port-out information (needed to call in and speak with somebody and provide 2 most frequently called numbers). The last time I used them about 9 months ago I was able to get my port out information directly from the app, though. I'm not sure if that's still possible.

I wouldn't recommend this company, especially if you're getting service for somebody else.

You can get account number and PIN when you login into their portal, the info is located in Manage Account section, you don't need to call them to port out.

How much total with taxes and fees?

Can you switch to another carrier once the plan ends?

FYI,
1) Lyca has switched to AT&T instead of T-Mobile, so the service has become significantly worse in my area.
2) It seems Lyca has blocked Privacy cards since the end of August. If you're planning to use one, you may get an error and have to switch to an alternative card to avoid being charged the full price for the renewal.

Tax is not much, like 25 cents.
You can port out.

Use temp cards to avoid that.

I used this for several months as a second line with eSIM. Can't speak to porting but works well for a new number

Worth noting! Lyca improved their speed once you use up the high speed data they throttle the speed to 3mbps, which is very usable!

I pay $30 for 12 months, unlimited call and text, no data. I found this plan on ebay.

Then I use traveller esim of other company, it is $6 for 5 gig or $10 for 10 gig a month. I mostly use free WiFi from home or at library or business using VPN if I am nervous.

My plans are cheaper.

RedPocket? They only recently introduced the $30/year plan with unlimited calls and texts, but it does come with 200 MB of data. My older daughter and I are still on their old $30 plan with 200 minutes, 1000 texts, and 200 MB data, though my younger daughter has the unlimited one. I'm looking forward to switching in a couple months.

Yes it is. I use combination of free data (use VPN if not comfortable) and traveller's esim for my data. I love saving money, but you have to be pro-active.

Holy cow that is an amazing plan- especially for my older in-laws that "don't use those darn smartphones for anything." In fact, I think if I could find flip phones for them, they'd prefer it.

Sounds like a great option, but after thinking about it, Calls and Text only won't work for people who use MAPS, Android Auto, or CarPlay often. Need continuous data while driving. I use it Android Auto everytime I drive. Not only does it help with police speed traps, but it does show me the speed limit on roads, which is helpful.

Nope, that is not true anymore. Just setup your online lyca account with your mobile and then goto manage account-> on top right corner you can see account number and port out pin without reaching out to customer service.

There are signs on the roads that show the speed limits. You just have to pay attention. Which is what you should always do when driving.
