Is it worth the potential hassle, or would you just go directly with another carrier even if it costs a little more?

Lyca Mobile is a very low cost option for basic talk, text, and light data, with 18GB, 8GB, and unlimited plans that can work well as a second line or throwaway number. The app and online dashboard can show the account number and transfer PIN, and porting has gone smoothly for some. Data can throttle to about 3 Mbps after the high speed allotment, and taxes are reported as low. The main cautions are unreliable service in some areas, random drops, and a messy support and cancellation experience, including blocked renewals, fraud checks, and difficult port outs.
Drivers who want a cheap second line for navigation, because maps and Android Auto can work while the plan's data is used sparingly.
Phone owners who keep calls and texts separate from data, because the line can handle voice and SMS while a second eSIM covers internet use.
Travelers needing a short-term backup number, because the service can work well for a new line and is easy to drop after a month.
Light-data users who are fine with throttled speeds, because the plan can drop to about 3 Mbps after high-speed data is used up.
Drivers who depend on constant mobile data for streaming or live traffic, because the connection can drop and LTE can be too slow for hotspot use.
Main-number users who cannot risk losing their phone number, because port-out can fail and leave the number in limbo.
People who need fast customer support, because account and compatibility questions can take weeks to answer.
Families or caregivers managing someone else's line, because porting and account changes can be difficult to handle remotely.

They will keep charging you. I got 3 months plan for my parents and had to cancel my card to get them off as they kept charging despite several emails and phone calls.

- If you do not setup auto-pay when ordering this offer, you LOSE this offer and customer service can do nothing about this. You will be stuck paying full price next month. This is not explained/warned anywhere obvious. Customer service might give you a free month of service next month, and a "reference ID" but that free month is a gamble if you miss out on other long-term discounts during the holiday season. And given how difficult Lyca is, so far I don't trust the free month will be a thing
- You can get your account number and transfer pin online
- While ordering this offer, if you do not select "I want to transfer my number" it will order and ACTIVATE the physical sim card with a NEW NUMBER. And you cannot transfer your old number. While the onus of this is partly on the user, this is not explained anywhere either. And it is in contrast to other providers where you order a plan and can later decide if you want a new number or transfer the same one.
- Your plan gets activated before you even receive a physical sim card. This means you lose on 2-3 days of service
- Internet drops out randomly during use. In regular/populated parts of the city. I had to disable/enable mobile data for it to work again.

FWIW, I use Lyca for my UK service and it's been pretty solid. Yes, their CS is terrible and I can't access their UK service app form the US iTunes Store. I guess the moral is to know that this is a throwaway service that you're getting for bottom dollar.
